Maybe They’re Not the One
Let’s not beat around the bush. Relationship Tarot readings make up the bulk of the work of a Tarot professional. People often come to us wanting to know how their relationship is doing and if it is going to work out. Sometimes they come to us when the relationship is brand new, after a date or two and they have already fallen head over heels in love. Other times they come much further down the line after already having experienced a bump or two along the road. At this stage, they sometimes suspect that the one they’re with is not the One.
In a past post, we listed some of the most common Tarot cards that indicate that they are indeed ‘the One.’ Today, I thought we’d take a closer look at the cards that indicate that the other person is most likely not the One.
Top 10 Tarot Cards that Tells You They are NOT The One
3 of Swords
The first card that springs to mind is the 3 of Swords. It doesn’t take much explaining, does it? I mean, who is going to look at the 3 of Swords card and say ‘Yay, happily ever after!’? This card usually heralds a break-up and the pain of separation in the future position. If the cards is in the past it could mean that your love interest has yet to heal from a past relationship. Either way, it is not a good sign but in the outcome position, it is very evident that this is going nowhere fast.

The Devil
Next up we have The Devil. If he shows up next to the card signifying your love interest, it could indicate that they do not have pure intentions. This card often shows up when the love interest is already partnered up but lying about it and then often in combination with the 3 of Cups, The Moon and/or the 7 of Swords. It could also indicate an addiction of some kind and is in this instance to be seen as a red flag more than as ground for an immediate break-up. The devil often shows up in co-dependent type relationships. If that is confirmed as being the case, do refer the Seeker to help through the appropriate channels (counselling etc).

The Hermit
When The Hermit shows up in the future position, you reach the logical conclusion that you will need to continue your journey on your own for a while longer. On the upside, this relationship will most likely have brought you at least one important life lesson. The Hermit asks you to take some time to allow for healing and integration. If the Hermit shows up as the significator of your beloved, it could be an indication that he is not relationship material – at least not in the traditional sense.

The Moon
The Moon offers nothing but confusion in the future position. There could be a strong karmic pull to keep trying to work things out though. The way to make the most of this kind of relationship is to go within, become the Observer and accept that the Other is most likely in your life to act as a mirror for something deep within that wants to come up for healing. When this healing process has concluded, this person will most likely not still be part of your life.

8 of Cups
The 8 of Cups in the present could mean that one of you (or both) is thinking about leaving the relationship. In the future position, it usually signifies one of you walking away from the relationship. The person walking away is feeling stuck and restless. Their gut is telling them to move on. They could have a sense of the relationship having too many restrictions or limitations, and/or that their partner is somehow limiting their growth potential. If things do get better for them after leaving depends, as always, on whether they have learned the lessons they were meant to learn.

5 of Cups
With the 5 of Cups as the outcome, we get a big emotional letdown. It can make it hard for us to feel optimistic about the future. The 5 of Cups is a big sign that we need to take time to process our emotions and understand what we projected onto the other person in terms of hopes and desires. This card signifies Scorpio energy and could be a sign that jealousy leads to the breakdown of the relationship.
Jealousy is a character trait that some people struggle more with – it is important to address this tendency to not move forward with the same pattern still in place. For the future, consider how you can create a foundation of mutual respect, freedom, and friendship so that the green-eyed monster doesn’t get a chance to wreck another relationship. Just as with the 3 of Swords, seeing this card for your love interest can indicate that they still suffer from regret over a situation that didn’t turn out quite the way they hoped.
Death
While Death certainly can mean transformation rather than the end of the relationship, I rarely see it mean anything other than a split when it shows up as the outcome in a love and relationship Tarot reading. I remember having a reading with another reader toward the end of my second marriage and Death came up in the future position of a three-card Past-Present-Future spread. She didn’t want to predict divorce. She told me that our marriage would undergo a major transformation but we would come out alright on the other end. I knew it meant divorce even though I hadn’t made the final decision yet because I knew that without a divorce, I could not have had the transformation I needed to become aligned with my soul’s calling.

The Tower
The Tower could mean the relationship will end with a very dramatic break-up with life-altering consequences, such as a cheating partner getting found out and deciding to dump their lover or an affair at work leading to someone getting fired. It can also signify a force majeur ending the relationship, such as an accident or natural disaster. Err on the side of caution with how you break this to the person you are reading for if you sense the latter may be the case. Two words sum The Tower up as the outcome card: ‘Brutal break-up.’

Knight of Wands
I don’t mean to be hating on the Knight of Wands who can be a rather lovely chap if he wants to be with his naturally sunny disposition. However, I and many other Tarot readers use him to signify the ‘Player’ (play-ah) archetype for a reason. The reason is that deep down the only one he cares to please is himself and his love for adventure by far supersedes his love for romance. He’s more of a flirt than a romantic. And of course, he could just as well be a she. If he shows up to signify your love interest or as the outcome card for the relationship, it’s not likely to last.

10 of Swords
Let’s end like we began – with another card from the suit of Swords. The 3 and 10 of Swords are by no means the only Swords card that can be a bit foreboding as the outcome in a love Tarot reading. You won’t be giggling with delight if you see the 5 or 7 either. They address drama/aggression and deception respectively, but they are not as definite about things having gone south as the 10 of Swords. On the plus side, this ending makes room for beautiful new beginnings once we can shift our focus from the pain we feel to the horizon where a new dawn is breaking…
