10 Ways for Seers to Prevent and Shed ‘The Ick’

Seer with Crystal Ball

If you are a tarot or angel card reader, you are by nature more sensitive than the average person. Sensitivity is, as you know, a double-edged sword. While it grants you the ability to pierce the veil and penetrate the mysteries, it also makes you more permeable for what could succinctly be described as ‘the ick’ – You know, the sticky energy you get from doing readings about toxic relationships or when reading for a person who is caught up in the despair and ego illusion.

Prevention should, of course, always be the first cause of action. And for this, there are both long-term and short-term practices you can put into place for yourself…

Meditation. You might have guessed this would be top of the list. Unfortunately, many lightworkers spend more time talking about it than actually doing it. The ego resistance is greater the bigger the potential transformation potential, and nothing has the potential to create greater change than a daily meditation practice. If you don’t know where to begin, just follow these five simple steps:

  1. Find and decide on a physical place you can return to on regular basis.
  2. Nourish your body so that you can settle into your practice. Make sure you are hydrated, rested and comfortable.
  3. Focus on quantity rather than quality until your central nervous system gets the message. I don’t mean that you need to spend hours in meditation but do decide beforehand how long you will sit (even if just five minutes) and let your family know that they can’t disturb you during that time. If you do this, quality will happen organically.
  4. Set the intent for your practice. Keep it short and sweet – perhaps just one word, such as love, peace, integrity, change, truth
  5. Keep it simple. Focus on the breath and observe. That’s it. You’re a natural. Don’t forget that a meditative state is very natural to you as a seer. You’ve got this!

I have seen readers post on social media about how they don’t need to meditate to read the cards. All I can say is, I would not get a reading from one of them. If you are not on a spiritual path with your readings, whom do you serve? And if you are on a spiritual path, how do you think you will be able to serve unless you hook up to Source?

Prayer. Directly asking for specific support and guidance is a wonderful way of showing trust in Source/God or The Universe (whatever name you choose to use is fine). Consider this too though: Prayer actually works. So why would you not use it to protect yourself and your clients from psychic attack and greater clarity about the messages that want to come through when you read? I highly recommend starting each reading with a prayer. It’s your best and cheapest ever insurance policy for avoiding the ‘ick.’ You can ask both your own guardian angel and the guardian angel of the client to help as well.

Chakra balancing. Regular chakra balancing is a wonderful form of self-care. And once you get the hang of it, you don’t need to spend hours and hours doing it. One simple way of balancing your chakra is to use the rainbow breath. You can start and end the day with this, but if you do it just once a week, it will still be a powerful practice.

Simply breathe red into your root chakra, orange for the sacral chakra, yellow for the solar plexus, green for the heart chakra, sky blue or turquoise for the throat chakra, indigo or purple for the third eye and white or violet for the crown chakra. Spend as many breaths on each chakra you feel is necessary. You will probably find that with a daily practice, two to three breaths are enough. If you like, you may wish to seal your aura with a colour too. Allow your intuition to guide you about which colour to go for.

Doing yoga or qigong will also keep your chakras aligned and the chi/prana flowing evenly.

Amethyst. Keep an amethyst cluster in your reading space. Amethyst is one of the few self-cleansing crystals and extremely powerful for transmuting negative energy. You may also consider clearing your cards of sticky energy by allowing it to ‘sleep’ on the cluster – especially your main working deck for client readings.

Incense. Burning certain forms of incense lifts the vibration and creates sacred space all around you when you read. Of course, if you are doing a one-to-one reading with the other person present, you need to check for allergies or asthma before lighting incense. Some of the most powerful vibration-raising incenses are frankincense, sandalwood, jasmine, rose and Nag Champa. However, we all respond differently to scents so don’t be afraid to experiment to see which ones work best for you!

Sometimes, no matter how well prepared you are and how many precautions you have taken to prevent the ick, it can still happen… Here are my top tips for shedding the ick.

Surrender. Something that can make the ick get a foot in the door is if the reading touches on something you are also dealing with and/or have not yet come to terms with in your own life. The key is to have a strategy for this. Instantly (silently) name it, acknowledge that something is being mirrored and then say a quick prayer of surrender. That way you can safely continue with the reading and also be able to provide advice for the Seeker that you too will benefit from when you are ready to deal with this (obviously not during the actually reading). Simple observe what is happening.

Shower. If the ick sticks really badly, one of the best ways to shed it is to stand under running water – yes, have a shower! You can combine this with prayer and visualising platinum-coloured light cleansing your aura.

Stomp your feet. If you just feel ‘fizzy’ and in need to ground rather than completely riddled with ick, one quick way to ground the energy is to simply stomp your feet.

Drink a glass of water. Water has the power to detoxify your physical body and if you bless it with a prayer, it can also cleanse your energy field at the same time.

Angelic intervention. Archangel Michael is the angel to turn to for powerful, quick and effective energy clearing. Simply ask him to cut all the cords between you and the person you have been reading for. You may also want to call on Archangel Raphael for healing and help with returning all of your own energy to you.

Chances are that you feel a bit tired and drained after, even if you’ve followed the suggestions above. That is to be expected. Any form of seership does take it out of you, so learn to value yourself and do more of the things you know recharge you. What that is will differ from person to person. Some of us like getting recharged in the gym and others by curling up on the sofa with a book and a cup of tea. Yet others need a night out to balance and recharge their energy (not all Seers are introverts!). It is also possible that you need different things on different days, so simply take a minute to tune in and ask your body – it will never lie to you!

Also, please don’t underestimate common-sense practices such as not scheduling too many readings, too close in time on the same day. You will quickly learn your limits. Vow to stick to them and don’t trick yourself into believing that the other person needs your reading today even though you are drained. Nobody will benefit under those circumstances.

Take good care of yourself, Seer friend!

I hope you find this advice helpful and if you do, please remember to share this article with your friends who may also benefit.

Blessed Be!

  1. Thanks for this Lisa. I like to walk my dog on the fields and visualise the wind blowing away all the negative energy I may have picked up…..I also have a shower ritual, and I also visualise all the negative energy going down the plughole too.
Tai chi is a good exercise for keeping your channels clear 🙂
