Deck Interview with The Witches Tarot by Ellen Dugan

When I got my Amazon voucher the other week (finally, after years of advertising on the blog!), I decided to pre-order The Witches Tarot by Ellen Dugan. It was a pleasant surprise when the deck and book set arrived earlier than expected yesterday afternoon.

Naturally, I had to do an interview with this deck. I was drawn to it both because of its choice of theme (anything witchy floats my boat) and the bright colours. Before I go on to share my first impressions of the cards below, I’ll let today’s guest of honour have her say:

I haven’t really had a chance to look through the companion book yet but I thought I’d share some more card images from the deck. First out are a couple of my favourites. I’ve rarely seen a yummier Knight of Swords and I love the joy and serenity in this Ten of Pentacles.

The second set of cards are two of the cards in this deck that made me spontaneously giggle when I first saw them – for two completely different reasons. The first one because it looks exactly like Mike Hernandez, a fellow Tarotist. Mike, if you’re reading this… That is you, right? The Chariot made me giggle because the horses are so totally out of control. I’ll never be able to look at this without thinking ‘Uh-oh… major third chakra issues’:

My two least favourite cards in this deck are the The Sun (too cheesy!) and the Five of Swords, because while all the other Minors are fully illustrated, this one feels more like a pip:

I really like the cosmic card backs. This set is of the same silky smooth quality as the Steampunk Tarot and the cards handle really well when shuffling.

The Witches Tarot is a deck I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to Tarot readers of any level – especially if you are looking for a deck with a bunch of lively Courtiers. They feel like real people in the Witches Tarot thanks to their faces being so infused with real, distinctive personalities.

Addendum July 2015: My 13 year old daughter fell in love with this deck, so it looks like I will have to order another copy since she managed to convince me that she needed mine 😛
