Your Reading Is Only Ever As Good As Your Question

Your reading is only ever as good as your question. This is because your question creates focus… almost like a funnel for the relevant information to come through. Every Tarot card has a thousand different meanings depending on the context and the question asked. A professional reader uses your question to tune into the right meaning.

You can still do general readings, of course. Mostly the guidance in a general reading will be… well, general. If you are really interested in moving forward, you must make sure to ask more specific questions of the cards. The right question is specific, empowering, proactive and helps you move from a) where you are now to b) where you want to be in the future.

Don’t be afraid to sit in silence and tune into the core of the issue you are trying to resolve. Look beyond first impressions. Be prepared to own your own shit (i.e. that which you tend to project onto others). Asking the right question means assuming full responsibility for your own destiny.

The more willing you are to align your ego personality (or little self) with your Higher Self, the better!

Questions that begin with ‘How…?’ are particularly useful, as the Tarot loves to provide practical action advice. ‘What…?,’ and ‘Why…?’ are other great ways to open up the question. Asking ‘Who…?’ and ‘Where…?’ works best if you have a few different options in mind already. Asking about specific people means you need to work out their significator cards based either on astrology or appearance. Do bear in mind that unless you ask for people to show up in a reading, Court Cards often signify action advice and can also serve to describe the situation, challenge or opportunity present.

‘Will I…?’ and ‘Will he/she/they…?’ are disempowering because it assumes that you do not have the power to change the future.

Don’t be afraid to ask the Big Questions of the Tarot, such as ‘Who am I?’ and ‘What am I for?.’ You can also ask any type of philosophical or existential question that springs to mind. These are my favourite types of questions as the answers often blow my mind.

By the way, it’s a myth that you can’t ask yes/no questions. You absolutely can. Just be prepared for a ‘maybe’ or ‘it’s still in the balance’ type answer as most things in life aren’t set in stone.

The same goes for timing. Yes, you can predict timing with the Tarot but it’s not usually 100% accurate as, again, it depends on circumstances not set in stone. Personally, I use astrological correspondences for timing when Spirit nudges me to include timing in the reading but I never offer a guarantee that I will be able to predict it.

Asking the same question over and over again will greatly annoy the cards and add to your confusion. Asking the same question with a different spread doesn’t change this, nor does asking the same question of several different Tarot readers – Not only will the latter confuse you, but it is also a surefire way of pissing a Tarot reader off… Try the old ‘But the other reader said…’ – I dare you!

When you ask the right question, the reading you receive will resonate deeply with your own inner knowing and fill you with optimism, whereas a fear-based question will provide an answer that makes you feel restricted and possibly even more worried than before you asked.
