Messages from the Yule Spirits Pick-a-Pile Tarot Readings

yule spirits solstice pick-a-pile

Happy Friday, Honeybees! For today’s Messages from the Yule Spirits pick-a-pile Tarot, you will receive a three-card reading with the following positional meanings:

  1. A message of wisdom from the Yule spirits.
  2. Support for your current challenges.
  3. Blessings they wish to bestow for the year ahead.

Before you hop on over to your reading, make sure to read about the Yule Spirits listed below and let me know in the comments which of these spirits you resonate the most deeply with. I’m feeling ancestral spirits this time of the year but also very much resonate with the spirit of the sun/son (Christ), albeit less and less in the religious sense.

We are using the traditional RWS Tarot deck for all three readings. As always with general readings, take only that which resonates. If you feel you need a more in-depth reading, you can book one HERE.

The Spirits of Yule – Keepers of Winter’s Magic

Yule, celebrated at the Winter Solstice, is a time rich with spirits and archetypes that embody the magic of the season. Chief among these are the Holly King and the Oak King, whose eternal battle symbolises the balance of light and dark. The Holly King reigns over the waning year, cloaked in evergreen and embodying the wisdom of introspection and rest. As the solstice dawns and light begins to return, the Oak King rises to rule the waxing year, representing renewal, growth, and vitality. This duality reminds us of nature’s cycles and the sacred rhythm of endings and beginnings.

Another key figure in Yule lore is the Goddess of Winter, often depicted in her crone aspect. She appears as Frau Holle from Germanic folklore, who shakes out her featherbed to create snow on the Earth below. In her role as the Crone, she is the keeper of deep, ancient wisdom, urging us to release what no longer serves and to honour the quiet power of transformation. Similarly, the Cailleach, a winter goddess from Celtic traditions, holds dominion over the darkest days, shaping the land with her staff and reminding us that winter is both a time of rest and preparation for rebirth.

Yule also honours the spirits of nature and home, such as the mischievous Yule Elves, Tomte or Nisse from my native Sweden. These spirits protect homes during the long winter nights but expect respect and offerings in return, such as bowls of porridge left out on Yule Eve. Two other Yule Spirits worthy of mention are the Sun (Solar Logos) and the Green Man. Together, these spirits guide us through the season of Yule, offering wisdom, protection, and blessings as we celebrate the return of the light and prepare for the new year ahead

Honouring the Ancestors at Yule

Yule is also a sacred time to connect with our ancestors, reflecting on their wisdom and honouring their role in shaping who we are today. Across cultures, this season of stillness and reflection is seen as a time when the veil between the worlds is thin, making it easier to commune with those who came before us. In Nordic traditions, the ancient festival of Jól involved offerings to the ancestors as part of a larger celebration of the cycle of life and death. Feasting was central to these rituals, with a portion of the meal or drink—often mead—set aside for the spirits of the departed. This practice symbolised gratitude for the ancestors’ guidance and a plea for their continued protection during the harsh winter months.
