The Willpower Tarot Spread

The Willpower Tarot Spread is inspired by the quote by Aleister Crowley you see in the Tarot spread image above. Strong willpower demands a strong, healthy ego – a topic very much in harmony with today’s Full Moon in Aries. Aries energy is all about honouring and expressing our individuality and that is something we just couldn’t do without an ego.

I know the ego gets a bad rap in spiritual circles but perhaps just for today we can see how we can put it to good use so that we can make the most of our virtues and keep our vices at bay. Discipline and willpower both depend on the ego doing its part. In this spread we look at how to bring it all into harmony to satisfy the Libra Sun as well 🙂

The Solar Plexus chakra

The solar plexus chakra is the seat of our personal power. This chakra corresponds with the Element of Fire. Aries is the first Fire sign of the Zodiac and one of the main Aries characteristics is willpower. Before pulling the first card, spend a moment or two focusing on the solar plexus chakra. How does the energy flow in this energy centre? After you pull the first card, try to sense how the energy of the card meets the energy of your SP chakra.

The Emperor card (Aries) in the first position of the spread would be a perfect example of a card indicating strong willpower. A Water Element card such as the Queen of Cups (Water of Water) would be a sign of willpower in need of strengthening.

Sample Tarot Reading

  1. Strength of willpower. King of Pentacles (Fire of Earth). As a typical Capricorn, if I know that what I am doing is useful, I stand firm in the power of my will. This King is the ‘good steward’ of all in his domain. He is more interested in being of service than expressing his unique individuality. He could also have a lot of willpower when it comes to accumulating riches, though that hardly applies in my case or I wouldn’t be doing Tarot readings for a living.
  2. Vice in need of willpower. Queen of Swords (Water of Air). I can be extremely undiplomatic and sharp-tongued at times. This needs to be kept in check for me to stay in harmony with the world around me.
  3. Virtue in need of willpower. 5 of Swords (Venus in Aquarius). I am good at walking away from drama. This card made me think of the INFJ door slam which I have no problems admitting being capable of and totally see as a virtue. Lately I have allowed drama to drain me because I haven’t contemplated the usefulness of certain activities as per the King of Pentacles. When I do so, I can see that my time has not been entirely well spent. Some of the exchanges lately have created a lose-lose rather than a win-win scenario. Time to slam that door, cut my losses and walk away rather than revisiting what happened in my mind. The 5 of Swords could also be an indication that other times I can be a bit too good/quick at saying goodbye. This happens when I find myself getting reactive like the shadow Queen of Swords and slam the door as a form of lashing out rather than doing it as a result of carefully contemplating the pros and cons for severing ties.
  4.  Discipline to apply to vice. 7 of Pentacles (Saturn in Taurus). I need to be more patient with myself and others. I can be a bit like the archer who fires off arrows at the rustle of leaves rather than waiting for a clear shot of my target. Again, I can see how slowing down to ask myself ‘Is this useful?’ would be extremely helpful.
  5. Discipline to apply to virtue. The Sun (the Sun). There is a need to cultivate a sunnier and more playful outlook on life in general. It is easy for me to start taking everything (myself included) oh so seriously… and that is such a trap because it is easy to think that seriousness is more useful than playfulness when really it is the other way around. If I can remain more optimistic and playful, I won’t be as tempted to allow drama to drain me of energy.

Love,

Lisa
