Can Christians Use Reiki?

Reiki and Christianity

Origins of Reiki

Reiki is an energy healing modality founded by Mikao Usui (1865-1926). According to the legend, he went up to the top of a mountain and fasted for 21 days to learn how to heal people. At the end of his fast, he was given the symbols that are still used in the Reiki healing system. The whole system revolves around these symbols, which are used to channel, direct and command healing energy from ‘the Universe.’

Reiki was made popular in the West by Mrs Takata who was born in Hawaii, 1900. She learned Reiki from Dr Hayashi in Japan in the 1930s and took it back with her to the USA. Between 1970 and 1980, Mrs Takta initiated 22 Reiki Masters and via them, Reiki spread all over the Western hemisphere.

To make Reiki more acceptable in the West, Mrs Takata told a story of Mikao Usui seeking to heal like Jesus. She claimed Reiki was given to Mikao Usui as a result of that spiritual quest. However, according to my Jikiden Reiki teacher, who studied in the lineage of Usui/Hayashi/Yamaguchi, this is completely untrue. I tend to believe my Jikiden Reiki teacher; there is nothing of the teachings of Christ in Reiki but some of the symbols can be traced back to Tibetan monasteries.

Where Does Reiki Healing Come From?

In Reiki, healing energy is seen as a neutral force that flows from an ‘it.’ This ‘it’ is referred to as ‘the Universe’ here in the West. Anybody who is initiated or attuned is said to be able to draw on this healing energy. Reiki healers pull the energy in by the use of specific Reiki symbols, as previously discussed.

In the West, there are also many add-ons to the original Japanese system, where people work with the chakras and spirit guides. This means that entities/spirits figure heavily in the practice of many Western healers. I have seen these spirits on a couple of occassions, so I can vouch for that from personal experience.

To become a Reiki healer, you have to be initiated by a Reiki Master/teacher. This always seemed odd to me, since Mikao Usui himself received his healing gift straight from ‘the Universe.’ Surely, that means that anybody can receive the same gift–especially if the Universe is a neutral force with no regard of personality, character traits or moral standing.

In effect, Reiki healing comes from/via another human being who is using a form of magick (let’s not kid ourselves!). This magick has its root in ancient Pagan and occult practices.

How Faith Healing Differs from Reiki

Faith healing is very simple; it has one basic requirement–faith. Faith in what? Faith in God, not faith in one’s own gift, not faith in circumstances surrounding the illnss or the future of the person… just faith in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Hence, to heal like Jesus, you must first enter into a personal relationship with God. How can you believe in someone you don’t know?

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

In the gospels, Jesus taught us to pray for healing for anybody who asks and to do so believing. We do not question or doubt if it is God’s will to heal someone; it is always God’s will for his beloved children to be whole. We pray for healing in the name of the One who sent us into the world to heal the sick, cast out demons and raise the dead.

But Jesus, aware of this, withdrew from there. Many followed Him, and He healed them all (…)

Matthew 12:15

In order to give Reiki healing, you must be attuned to certain magickal symbols. You receive these symbols during initation ceremonies into the three degrees of the Reiki Healing system: shoden, okuden and shinpiden. The symbols are placed in your aura. I believe the symbols act as portals for spirits who are the otherworldly teachers of this system that Usui received supernaturally.

When you give healing in the name of Jesus, you do so by the power of God, plus nothing and minus nothing. The Holy Spirit guides you on any specifics, as well as any words of knowledge you may receive for the person in need of healing. Everything you do is through God and for His glory.

Distant Healing?

I was recently asked to ‘send healing’ in the name of Jesus and I had to explain that I do not send anything, I ask for God to heal. I ask and when healing happens, only God receives the glory. As witnessed in the story of the Centurion whose servant was ill, faith healing can take place over any distance:

“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed. For I too am a person subject to authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes; and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith (…)”

Matthew 8:8-10

Does Reiki Work Though?

Reiki does work, to a certain extent, just as many of the New Age modalities do. However, unlike faith healing, I have yet to witness any miracles happen via Reiki. The reason it kind of works is that it is a counterfeit system set up by the enemy to take you away from faith in the one true God.

Ultimately, there is no personal God or saviour in this system; the glory for any healing that takes place goes to the healer, not to God, usually after a fair amount of money has been given to the healer.

The title ‘Reiki Master’ is thankfully one I never used for myself. It gives the false impression that the person using it is some kind of spiritual master. Sadly, Reiki healers are slaves to a limited, manmade system. Many of the people using this title are incredibly lost and broken… and indeed in need of healing. My heart goes out to them.

My own experience of practising Reiki is that it helped me sense energy but it also made me believe that I, not God, was in control of that energy. Ultimately, Reiki was one of the things that acted as a wedge between me and my Lord and Saviour; I have repented of that with every fiber of my being.

Can Christians Use Reiki?

What Should a Christian Who Has Had Reiki Do?

If you have been to see a Reiki healer, you need to ask God to forgive you. This is also true if you have been learning Reiki for yourself. Repent and get back into the Word of God, to learn the truth about healing. There are good Christian teaching videos on this topic too. If you wish to see the kind of miracles that God performs through those who believe in Him. Look up Todd White, for instance.

Please be aware that if you are called to be a healer, this is from God. Do not think that it isn’t just because you have been exploring the enemy’s alternatives. However, do stay vigilant! Those who have the calling to be healers, will be under heavy attack from the enemy who does not wish for you to use this gift for the glory of God.

If you are a Christian only by name and have not yet surrendered your life to the Lord, you need to ask Him to become Lord of all that you are and all that you have first. Surrender is always the first step to being used in service for the Kingdom, whatever your spiritual gift may be.
