Are you looking for greater clarity, wisdom or inspiration? Archangel Uriel has guided seekers for centuries whenever they’ve needed to cut through confusion and see a situation in a new light. His name is usually translated as “Fire of God” or “Light of God,” and both capture something essential about this remarkable archangel. Uriel doesn’t simply provide answers. He helps us ask better questions.
Although Uriel isn’t mentioned in the canonical Bible, he appears in some of the oldest Jewish apocalyptic writings and has gone on to become one of the best-known archangels in Jewish mysticism, Christian tradition and Western esotericism. The more I researched him, the more I realised there isn’t just one Uriel. Different traditions emphasise different aspects of his ministry. Some present him as the angel of wisdom and prophecy, others as the keeper of sacred fire or the revealer of hidden truths.
On Angelorum, I work with Uriel primarily through the modern Pauline Art tradition, where he shares the rulership of Saturday with Archangel Cassiel. I also use the modern esoteric correspondences of Uranus and The Fool, together with the ceremonial magic associations of the North and the element Earth. Rather than trying to decide which tradition is “right,” I find it more helpful to ask what each one reveals about the many ways Divine Wisdom enters our lives.
In this guide, we’ll explore Archangel Uriel’s origins, correspondences and practical ways of working with him through prayer and Tarot. Uriel’s guidance is especially valuable when life feels uncertain, when important decisions lie before you or when you’re hungry for deeper spiritual understanding.

Who Is Archangel Uriel?
Unlike Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Uriel occupies an unusual place in the angelic tradition. He is deeply revered by many Jews and Christians and plays an important role in Western esotericism, yet he doesn’t appear in the canonical Bible. Instead, we encounter him in Jewish apocalyptic literature, where he serves as a messenger of Divine Wisdom and one of the great angels who stand before God.
Over the centuries, Uriel’s role continued to evolve. Some traditions describe him as the angel who warned Noah of the coming Flood. Others portray him as the interpreter of visions, the keeper of sacred knowledge or the angel who guards the entrance to Eden with a flaming sword. In Christian tradition, he has also been associated with repentance, prophecy and the light of Divine Truth.
One of the things I find most fascinating about Uriel is that no single tradition defines him completely. Jewish mysticism, Christian theology, ceremonial magic and modern esoteric practice all emphasise different aspects of his ministry. Rather than trying to force those traditions into agreement, I prefer to let them enrich one another. Each offers another glimpse of what it might mean to call Uriel the Angel of Wisdom.
Agrippa on Archangel Uriel
Although Archangel Uriel is one of the best-known angels in modern spirituality, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa says remarkably little about him in Three Books of Occult Philosophy. Agrippa mentions Uriel only once, identifying “Nariel, who by some is called Uriel” as one of the four angelic princes. Unlike later writers, he does not develop Uriel’s role as the Angel of Wisdom or associate him with the North or the element Earth.

What Does Archangel Uriel Help With?
Life has a habit of confronting us with questions that don’t have easy answers. We reach a crossroads and feel pulled in different directions. We know something needs to change but can’t quite see what.
Those are the moments when many of us turn to Archangel Uriel.
Rather than removing uncertainty, Uriel helps us navigate it with greater wisdom. Instead of telling us what to think, he encourages us to think more deeply. A new perspective, a sudden insight or a simple realisation can be enough to transform a situation that previously felt impossible to untangle.
You may wish to call on Uriel for help with:
- Making important life decisions
- Seeing the truth of a situation
- Spiritual study and contemplation
- Solving difficult problems
- Creative inspiration
- Understanding dreams, visions and intuitive insights
- Breaking through confusion or mental blocks
- Finding purpose and direction
- Recognising the lessons hidden within life’s challenges
One thing I’ve noticed in my own work is that Uriel’s presence brings a sense of peace and stability. Uriel’s guidance often arrives quietly. The fog lifts. A problem that seemed impossible yesterday suddenly has an obvious solution. You notice a connection you had overlooked or understand an old experience in a completely new light.
How to Work with Archangel Uriel
Working with Archangel Uriel doesn’t require elaborate ritual or years of esoteric training. It begins with intention. The more sincerely you seek wisdom, the more receptive you become to recognising it. The more sincerely you seek wisdom, the more receptive you become to recognising it.
Because Uriel is associated with Saturday in the modern Pauline Art tradition, many people choose this day for prayer, meditation or Tarot work. If you follow ceremonial magic correspondences, you may also like to face North or include the element Earth on your altar as a reminder to stay grounded while seeking higher understanding.
You don’t need complicated rituals to invite Uriel’s guidance into your life. Lighting a candle before journalling, praying before studying sacred texts or asking for wisdom before making an important decision can all become simple acts of cooperation with Divine Intelligence.
I also find Tarot to be a powerful way of working with Uriel. Rather than asking, “What will happen?” try questions that invite greater understanding.
- What am I failing to see?
- What truth am I resisting?
- What would wisdom do here?
- What lesson is this situation trying to teach me?
Uriel doesn’t encourage passive waiting for answers to arrive from outside ourselves. Instead, this archangel helps illuminate the wisdom that grows through prayer, reflection, honest self-examination and a willingness to act on what we discover.
A Simple Tarot Meditation with The Fool
Take The Fool from your favourite Tarot deck and spend a few quiet moments gazing at the image. Notice the open landscape, the sense of possibility and the traveller standing on the threshold of a new adventure. Rather than asking the card to predict the future, allow it to remind you that Divine Wisdom is always available when you approach life with an open heart and a willing mind.
As you meditate on the card, pray:
Archangel Uriel, illuminate my mind and open my heart to Divine Wisdom. Help me to trust that the guidance I need is available in every moment. Show me what I need to see, teach me what I need to understand, and give me the courage to act on the truth with humility and love. Amen, and so it is.
Sit with the card for five or ten minutes. Don’t force insights to appear. Simply remain present and receptive. You may notice a thought, an image or a memory gently rising into awareness. If nothing seems to happen, that’s perfectly fine too. Wisdom has its own timing.
Signs Archangel Uriel May Be Near
So how can you tell if Archangel Uriel is near? In my experience, Uriel doesn’t announce himself with fireworks or bright lights, despite being an angel of illumination. The first sign is peace and the quiet confidence that you’re able to think clearly again.
Other signs may include:
- The return of inner peace after a period of confusion.
- Finally understanding something you’ve been wrestling with for weeks, months or even years.
- The penny suddenly dropping.
- Feeling drawn to study Scripture, philosophy, Tarot or another wisdom tradition.
- Seeing a situation from a completely different perspective.
- Realising the answer was there all along—you simply weren’t ready to recognise it.
- Feeling less interested in being right and more interested in discovering what is true.
As with all angelic guidance, discernment remains essential. We make room for true angelic guidance by surrendering the ego’s agenda to Divine Wisdom.
