7 Health Benefits & 7 Magical Uses for Frankincense

Frankincense

Frankincense (Boswellia sacra), aka olibanum, is an essential oil that is particularly popular around this time of year. It is one that we associate with Christmas thanks to the tale of three wise men who brought baby Jesus frankincense, gold and myrrh. But there are many other good reasons why you should stock up on frankincense before the holiday season is in full swing…

7 Health Benefits of Frankincense Essential Oil

Stress relief. Frankincense is one of the main stress-relievers among essential oils. I don’t know about you but the thought of doing the Christmas shopping raises my blood pressure by a good few points. I can think of other uses too… Spending Christmas days with the in-laws? Have to deal with three kids that are full of cold in the week leading up to Christmas? You get the picture and I’m sure you can imagine other times when this soothing oil would come in handy.  Try a nice hot, relaxing bath with 5-8 drops of frankincense oil, either neat or mixed with a dispersing agent such as a tablespoon of vegetable oil, a teaspoon of honey, or half a cup of milk.

Anti-inflammatory

Inflammatory conditions such as asthma, IBS and arthritis can improve with regular use of frankincense essential oil. Do not replace your regular medication with the oil and do talk to your doctor/GP about using essential oil if you have any questions or doubts about using it. I know from personal experience that it can relieve asthma.

Immune booster

Destroys both viruses and bacteria. Can be used together with baking soda to replace fluoride toothpaste. Reduces gingivitis and has even been proven to kill cancer cells.

Natural disinfectant

Can be used to replace harmful chemicals when cleaning your home. Especially this time of year… Who doesn’t want their home smelling of frankincense? It effectively kills cold and flu viruses that could be spreading around the home.

Skincare

Frankincense has skin-healing properties and can be used both to rejuvenate ageing skin as well as fight acne. Simply mix it with your regular (unscented) moisturiser. I like to mix 1 or 2 drops of frankincense with half a teaspoon of virgin coconut oil before I rub it on my face. It is also excellent for scar healing, again ideally mixed with coconut oil.

Nail care

Rub it into your nails and cuticles, mixed with a bit of virgin olive oil, if you need to strengthen your nails.

Muscle strain and joint pain

Massage the diluted essential oil into the area that aches. Use 3-6 drops of essential per ounce of carrier oil. Organic almond oil is ideal.

7 Magical Uses for Frankincense Essential Oil

Solar magic. Frankincense is associated with both ‘the Son’ and ‘the Sun.’ In Kabbalah, it would fall in the sphere of Tiphereth. Apollo, the solar deity who was patron of the Oracle at Delphi would gladly accept an offering of frankincense. The Egyptian solar deity Ra used to receive a daily offering of frankincense.

Angel Magick. Archangel Michael is the ruler of the Sun and Sundays, so use frankincense essential oil to dress a gold or azure blue candle when you invoke his assistance.

Meditation. It raises your vibration and puts your mind in the right place for meditation and contemplation. You can use the essential oil in a diffuser, anoint yourself with the oil (on the temples) or use a good quality frankincense joss stick.

Creating sacred space. Frankincense is one of the main scents used by the Catholic church and that is because it easily transforms the room where it is diffused. Use it mindfully to clean and scent ritual space – it makes a massive difference.

Enhance psychic ability. Use it in a working for increasing your psychic abilities, especially clairvoyance. This would be focused on your third eye which you could anoint with the oil. Make your own anointing oil by mixing a few drops of frankincense with virgin olive oil. If you like, you can add a few drops of myrrh essential oil to it.

Exorcism. Allegedly. But I haven’t tried this yet so I can’t really comment. If you have tried this I would love to hear from you in the comments below!

Healing magick. Pretty much any healing spell will benefit from a boost of frankincense essential oil.
