Archangel Zuriel: Angel of Libra, Justice and Harmony

Archangel Zuriel in emerald-green robes holding golden scales beneath the Hebrew letter Lamed, symbolising Libra, justice and divine balance.

As we approach Libra Season, it is time to meet Archangel Zuriel, the traditional ruling angel of Libra. Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa names Zuriel among the twelve angels set over the signs of the zodiac. Francis Barrett later repeated this attribution in The Magus, and it also enters the correspondence system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Libra is often reduced to romance, good taste, indecision and a desire to keep everyone happy. Its deeper spiritual current concerns justice, reciprocity and right relationship. The scales are not ornamental. They represent the ongoing work of weighing truthfully, choosing wisely and making intelligent adjustments when something has fallen out of balance.

Zuriel offers us a way of understanding harmony that does not depend on appeasement. True peace has a foundation. It asks us to balance mercy with truth, cooperation with healthy boundaries and reconciliation with moral clarity.

You don’t have to be a Libran to work with Zuriel. We all have Libra somewhere in the birth chart. More importantly, all of us encounter questions involving fairness, relationships, compromise, values and judgment.

In this Zodiac angel guide, we’ll explore Zuriel’s history and correspondences, clarify his relationship with Venus, Anael and Raphael, and look at practical ways to work with the angel of Libra through prayer, meditation and Tarot.

Who Is Archangel Zuriel?

Zuriel is the traditional ruling angel of Libra in the Agrippan current of Western ceremonial magic.

In Book III, Chapter XXIV of Three Books of Occult Philosophy, Agrippa gives a list of twelve spirits governing the zodiac signs. He assigns Malchidael to Aries, Asmodel to Taurus and so on through the zodiac, stating simply: “over Libra Zuriel.”

However, Agrippa does not provide Zuriel with an elaborate biography, appearance or collection of miraculous exploits. Barrett preserves the same attribution in The Magus, while the Golden Dawn incorporates Zuriel into a much larger network of Libra correspondences.

That sparse record matters. It gives us a genuine historical foundation without providing an excuse to manufacture ancient Zuriel lore by the wheelbarrow.

Meanwhile, historical sources usually call Zuriel an angel, spirit or ruler of Libra rather than identifying him as an archangel by formal rank. I use Archangel Zuriel in the modern devotional sense of a principal angel governing one of the twelve zodiac signs.

What Does the Name Zuriel Mean?

The Hebrew name Zuriel, צוּרִיאֵל, is commonly translated as “My rock is God,” “God is my rock” or “Rock of God.” It combines tzur, meaning rock, with El, a Divine name.

Zuriel also appears as a personal name in Numbers 3:35, where Zuriel, son of Abihail, is the human leader of the Merarite clans. These Levites were entrusted with the care and transport of parts of the Tabernacle.

This does not make the biblical Zuriel an angel, nor does the shared name establish that the two figures are identical. Nevertheless, the meaning of the name provides a beautiful foundation for Zuriel’s work. Justice requires firm principles. Harmony needs a stable centre.

A Modern Channelled View of Zuriel

In The Archangel Fire Oracle, Alexandra Wenman presents a modern interpretation of Zuriel channelled under the guidance of Archangel Gabriel. Her Zuriel appears in feminine form and is associated with diplomacy, fair play and the restoration of equilibrium. Wenman also connects her with a pinkish-violet flame, spiral movement and the ability to remain centred when opposing forces threaten to pull us off balance.

This is a good time to remind ourselves that age establishes provenance rather than spiritual authority. An older attribution does not automatically make it a more complete or accurate description of an angelic being. Angelic traditions continue to develop through prayer, vision, revelation and direct spiritual encounter, as well as through inherited texts.

Archangel Zuriel’s Correspondences

These correspondences combine Zuriel’s historical zodiacal office with Golden Dawn symbolism and clearly modern devotional additions.

  • Pronunciation: ZOOR-ee-el
  • Meaning of Name: My rock is God, God is my rock or Rock of God
  • Virtues: Justice, reciprocity, harmony, diplomacy and right relationship
  • Angelic Office: Ruling Angel of Libra
  • Zodiac Sign: Libra
  • Element: Air
  • Modality: Cardinal
  • Planetary Ruler: Venus
  • Recommended Day: Friday
  • Golden Dawn Hebrew Letter: Lamed (ל)
  • Tree of Life Path: 22nd Path, connecting Geburah and Tiphareth
  • Golden Dawn Colour: Emerald green
  • Tarot Major Arcana: Justice — VIII in the Golden Dawn sequence and XI in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck
  • Tarot Minor Arcana: 2, 3 and 4 of Swords and the Queen of Swords
  • Geomantic Figure: Puella
  • Planetary Angel: Anael or Haniel in various Venusian systems
  • Elemental Archangel: Raphael as the Golden Dawn archangel of Air
  • Incense: Galbanum, or rose as a gentler devotional Venus correspondence
  • Psalm: Psalm 85:10
  • Modern Devotional Crystal: Rose quartz, emerald or green aventurine
  • Candle Colour: Emerald green, pale green or pink

The essential distinction is that Zuriel governs Libra, while Venus rules Libra astrologically.

In practice, these correspondences occupy different layers. Once we stop expecting one angel to perform every celestial job simultaneously, the apparent contradictions become much easier to manage.

What Does Archangel Zuriel Help With?

Archangel Zuriel is a natural ally whenever we need to restore right relationship without sacrificing truth.

You may feel drawn to work with Zuriel when you need help with:

  • Reaching a fair agreement.
  • Seeing more than one side of a dispute.
  • Making a decision based on values rather than approval.
  • Establishing healthier boundaries in a relationship.
  • Recognising an imbalance in giving and receiving.
  • Balancing mercy with accountability.
  • Negotiating without abandoning your own needs.
  • Distinguishing genuine peace from conflict avoidance.
  • Repairing a relationship where reconciliation remains possible.
  • Knowing when compromise is wise and when it becomes complicity.
  • Bringing greater harmony, proportion or beauty into your surroundings.

Libra’s balance is not a perfectly static fifty-fifty arrangement. The scales remain responsive. They register new information and require continual adjustment.

In other words, this is living equilibrium.

Zuriel’s harmony is therefore principled rather than merely pleasant. Sometimes harmony is restored through agreement. At other times, it requires a clear decision, an honest conversation or a firm no.

Keeping the peace at any cost is not peace. It is usually an invoice that arrives later, with interest.

Why Is Zuriel Not the Only Angel Associated with Libra?

Search online for the angel of Libra and you may find Zuriel, Haniel, Anael, Raphael, Jophiel or Raguel. This can make angelic correspondences look as though they were assembled during a particularly chaotic committee meeting.

Most of the confusion comes from combining different levels of correspondence.

In Agrippa’s system, Zuriel rules Libra, while Anael governs Venus, Libra’s planetary ruler. Some later traditions use Haniel in the Venusian role or treat Haniel and Anael as closely related names.

Meanwhile, the Golden Dawn assigns Raphael to Air. Since Libra is an Air sign, Raphael can be invoked within an elemental Libra working without replacing Zuriel as the zodiacal angel.

By contrast, modern writers sometimes assign Jophiel to Libra because of beauty, wisdom and aesthetic harmony. Raguel may appear because of his popular association with justice, fairness and harmonious relationships. These are understandable devotional associations, but they do not come from Agrippa’s list of zodiac rulers.

The layers can be summarised quite simply:

  • Zodiacal ruler of Libra: Zuriel
  • Planetary ruler of Libra: Venus
  • Angel associated with Venus: Anael or Haniel, depending on the system
  • Elemental archangel of Air: Raphael
  • Modern thematic associations: Jophiel, Raguel and others

For this reason, one attribution does not automatically invalidate the rest. The useful question is not, “Which angel is the only correct one?” but, “Which level of the system am I working with?”

For the purposes of this Zodiac Angels series, I follow the Agrippan and Golden Dawn correspondence:

Libra → Zuriel

Libra, Venus, Lamed and Justice

Zuriel’s deeper symbolism becomes clearer when we follow the Golden Dawn correspondence chain:

Libra → Venus → Lamed → Justice

Venus gives Libra its awareness of relationship, attraction, agreement, beauty and shared values. Yet Venus in cardinal Air is not only concerned with romance or decoration. Libra asks how separate people, needs and principles can coexist within an intelligent order.

In this context, beauty is more than prettiness. It arises from proportion. A beautiful arrangement feels right because its individual parts relate harmoniously to the whole.

The Hebrew letter assigned to Libra is Lamed (ל). Its name is traditionally associated with an ox-goad, while its Hebrew root is connected with learning and teaching. An ox-goad directs strength towards a chosen course. It does not remove power. Rather, it gives power direction.

On the Qabalistic Tree of Life, Lamed is the 22nd Path, connecting Geburah, the sphere of Severity, with Tiphareth, the sphere of Beauty and solar harmony. This gives Zuriel’s justice a clear spiritual direction. The corrective force of Geburah must be brought into relationship with the compassionate centre of Tiphareth. Justice is not severity for its own sake. It is the measured application of strength in service to Divine Order.

In turn, this adds an important dimension to Libra. Balance is not passive. It must be learned, maintained and sometimes corrected.

Then we arrive at Justice, the Tarot trump assigned to Libra. It is numbered VIII in the Golden Dawn sequence and XI in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck, but its correspondence with Libra remains the same. Her scales weigh evidence, actions and consequences. The sword separates truth from convenient fiction and makes the necessary decision.

Justice does not ask us to avoid judgment. It asks us to judge honestly.

Justice and the Libra Decan Cards

The three Libra decan cards reveal what this work looks like in practice. With the Moon in Libra, the 2 of Swords pauses between competing perspectives. Saturn in Libra gives the 3 of Swords its confrontation with separation and difficult truth. Finally, the 4 of Swords, Jupiter in Libra, creates the mental space needed for recovery and a wiser response. These Minor Arcana cards reveal that peace sometimes arrives through a decision, a boundary, or a period of rest.

Zuriel’s name anchors the entire correspondence. “God is my rock” places justice on something more reliable than popularity, appearance or the desire to be liked. Although the scales may move, the centre from which we weigh must remain steady.

How to Work with Archangel Zuriel

Libra Season is the most natural time to work with Zuriel. Friday may also be used because Libra is ruled by Venus. A waxing Moon suits reconciliation and strengthening relationships, while a waning Moon can support the release of unfair agreements or people-pleasing patterns.

A Simple Zuriel Working

Begin by naming your intention. Choose one situation involving fairness, cooperation, boundaries or a decision. Avoid asking Zuriel to make another person comply with your wishes. The purpose is alignment with Divine Order, not control.

Next, light your candle and incense. Place the Justice card where you can see it.

Recite Psalm 85:10:

“Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”

Then pray:

Archangel Zuriel, angel of Libra,
establish me upon the firm foundation of Divine truth.
Help me see this situation from every necessary angle
without surrendering moral clarity.
Teach me where to adjust, where to compromise
and where I must remain steadfast.
Restore right relationship within me and around me
for the Highest Good of All.
Amen, and so it is.

Afterwards, imagine yourself standing upon a steady rock. Before you is a set of golden scales.

Place your needs on one side and the needs of others on the opposite side. Notice whether you have exaggerated either. Have you placed yourself above everyone else, or quietly removed yourself from the scales altogether?

Ask:

What adjustment would bring this situation into greater truth and right relationship?

Remain silent for a few minutes. Record any thoughts, feelings or images that arise.

Before closing, choose one practical action. This may be initiating a conversation, correcting an unfair arrangement, apologising, requesting what you need or refusing a compromise that violates your values.

Finally, thank God and Zuriel for their guidance.

Signs Archangel Zuriel May Be Near

There are no traditional historical lists of signs associated with Zuriel. These are better understood as patterns of resonance that may become noticeable during devotional work.

You may experience:

  • Repeated encounters with symbols related to Zuriel.
  • A growing awareness of imbalance in a relationship.
  • An opportunity to mediate, negotiate or repair a disagreement.
  • Greater clarity about where you have confused kindness with compliance.
  • A desire to restore beauty, order or proportion.
  • Emerald green appearing repeatedly during prayer or reflection.
  • A calm but firm conviction about what is fair.
  • An unexpected solution that honours more than one legitimate need.

Zuriel’s presence may be felt less as passive serenity and more as an inner recalibration. Something settles into its proper place. The answer may not please everyone, but it feels balanced, honest and clean.

The Archangel Zuriel Tarot Spread

This five-card Libra Tarot spread can be used whenever you need help with justice, relationships, boundaries or a difficult decision. Its use is not limited to Libra Season.

Before laying out the cards, centre yourself, recite Psalm 85:10 (optional) and invite Zuriel to guide your reading for the Highest Good.

Archangel Zuriel five-card Tarot spread arranged with card 4 above, cards 2, 1 and 3 across the centre, and card 5 below for exploring balance, justice and right relationship.

1. The Imbalance

Where is balance or right relationship needed now?

Here you see the situation as it currently stands, including the central issue asking for your attention.

2. My Side of the Scales

What needs, values or responsibilities am I bringing to this situation?

The card clarifies what genuinely belongs on your side. It can also reveal where you are minimising your needs or giving them more weight than everything else.

3. The Other Side of the Scales

What other legitimate need, perspective or principle must I consider?

This may represent another person, the wider consequences of your choice or a truth you have not yet given sufficient weight. It does not automatically mean the other side is right.

4. The Just Adjustment

What proportionate action would restore greater truth and integrity?

Here the reading becomes practical. This card may call for compromise, clearer boundaries, honest communication or a definite decision.

5. Right Relationship

What becomes possible when I act from a stable and principled centre?

The final card reveals the harmony or right relationship that may become possible once the scales have been adjusted.

If you like, place Justice from a separate deck above the spread. Let her scales remind you to listen carefully, and her sword remind you that discernment eventually requires a choice.
