If you’ve searched for Archangel Anael online, you’ve probably also come across the name Haniel. The two names refer to the same angel, yet many modern books assign Haniel to the Moon while older magical and Kabbalistic sources consistently associate Anael with Venus and Friday.

In this guide, I’ve chosen to use the traditional spelling Anael. My reason is simple: it reflects the historical sources that have shaped much of Western esotericism, including the Ars Paulina, where Anael is the ruling angel of Venus. Using this spelling also distinguishes the Venusian archangel from the modern lunar attribution that has become widespread in New Age literature.

As with the other guides in this Archangels series, I aim to remain faithful to the historical traditions while also exploring what it means to cultivate a living relationship with the archangels today. Anael teaches us that sacred eros is more than romantic love. It is the force that helps us fall in love with life itself and, through beauty, with God.

Jewish Tradition

Unlike Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Anael is not named in the canonical Hebrew Bible. The name most commonly associated with this archangel, Ḥaniel (חניאל), appears in Scripture only as a human name. In Numbers 34:23, Haniel is the father of Bukki, the tribal leader appointed to help divide the Promised Land among the Israelites.

The angelic Anael belongs instead to the rich body of Jewish angelology that developed during the Second Temple period and continued to evolve through later mystical traditions. As Jewish thought explored the roles and hierarchies of the heavenly host, many angels beyond those in the Tanakh came to be recognised and assigned particular functions.

Although the earliest Jewish sources do not consistently present Anael as a planetary angel, they laid the foundations for the more developed angelic hierarchies that would later flourish in Kabbalah and Western esotericism. It is within those traditions that Anael becomes firmly associated with Venus, beauty, grace and the sephirah Netzach.

Anael in Western Esotericism

Kabbalah

In Kabbalah, Archangel Anael corresponds with Netzach, the seventh sephirah on the Tree of Life. Netzach is the sphere of love, beauty, creativity, desire and victory through endurance. It represents attraction rather than force, balancing the severity of Geburah with the analytical qualities of Hod.

As the angel of Netzach, Anael expresses the higher qualities of Venus. This extends far beyond romantic love to include artistic inspiration, compassion, generosity, gratitude and the ability to recognise beauty as a gift from God. Different Kabbalistic schools sometimes assign angels differently, but the association between Anael, Netzach and Venus has remained one of the best-established correspondences in Western esotericism.

Medieval and Renaissance Magic

By the medieval period, Anael had become firmly established as the ruling angel of Venus in the planetary magic of the Western esoteric tradition. The archangel appears in influential grimoires such as the Heptameron and the Ars Paulina, where each of the seven archangels governs one of the classical planets and corresponds with one of the days of the week.

In these texts, Anael presides over Friday, the day ruled by Venus. Practitioners invoked the angel for workings relating to love, friendship, reconciliation, beauty, fertility, artistic inspiration and prosperity. At their best, these operations were not about controlling other people but about bringing the practitioner into closer alignment with the beneficent qualities of Venus.

A Living Tradition

Today, very few people practise planetary magic exactly as it appears in the old grimoires. Yet Anael’s sphere of influence is no less relevant. Every act of genuine kindness, every creative work born of love, every attempt to bring peace where there has been conflict belongs, in one way or another, to the Venusian current.

This is why I still find Anael such a compelling archangel to work with. Beneath all the symbolism and correspondences is a simple invitation: to become a little more gracious, a little more generous and a little more appreciative of the beauty that God has woven into creation.

Why Anael Rules Venus and Friday

The Planet Venus

In the traditional Western esoteric worldview, the seven classical planets were understood as expressions of God’s ordering of creation, with the archangels serving as ministers of those Divine qualities.

Known in traditional astrology as the Lesser Benefic, Venus rules both Taurus and Libra. Taurus expresses Venus through the pleasures of the senses, beauty, nature and material abundance. Libra expresses her through relationship, harmony, justice and diplomacy. Together, these two signs reveal that Venus is about much more than romance. She teaches us how to appreciate beauty, cultivate peace and live in right relationship with both God and one another.

This is why Anael is associated with Venus. The archangel calls us beyond fleeting desire to something richer: grace, generosity, creativity and love that seeks the highest good. Whether through art, music, friendship, hospitality or simple acts of kindness, Anael reminds us that beauty is one of the ways God speaks to the human heart.

Friday

Friday has belonged to Venus since ancient times. The Romans called it dies Veneris (Day of Venus), a name that survives in languages such as French (vendredi), Spanish (viernes) and Italian (venerdì). English took a different route, naming the day after the Germanic goddess Frigg (or, according to some scholars, Freya), while preserving its Venusian association.

For me, one of the most beautiful things about this correspondence is that it isn’t limited to astrology or ceremonial magic. Every Friday offers a gentle invitation to pause, create something beautiful, nurture a relationship, spend time in nature or simply thank God for the abundance already present in our lives. That’s a rhythm worth keeping, whatever your spiritual tradition.

The Empress Angelic Tarot Card Meanings

Archangel Anael and The Empress

Archangel Anael is traditionally associated with The Empress, the Tarot’s great archetype of beauty, creativity and abundance. Ruled by Venus, the Empress expresses the same qualities that have long been attributed to Anael in the Western esoteric tradition: love, grace, harmony and the life-giving power of creation.

Although she is often reduced to a symbol of romance or motherhood, The Empress encompasses much more than either. She reminds us that all genuine creativity begins with receptivity. Whether we are bringing a child into the world, writing a book, planting a garden or healing a relationship, every act of creation starts by making space for something new to emerge.

This is why Anael’s influence extends well beyond matters of the heart. As the angel of Venus, Anael inspires artists, musicians, writers and anyone seeking to bring something beautiful into the world. The Venusian current is also reflected in friendship, hospitality, generosity and the ability to appreciate beauty wherever we encounter it.

The Shadow of Venus

Like every Tarot archetype, however, The Empress has a shadow side. When Venus falls out of balance, love can become possessiveness, generosity can become people-pleasing, and the desire for beauty can tip into vanity or overindulgence. Likewise, blocked Empress energy may appear as creative stagnation, difficulty receiving love or a tendency to neglect one’s own needs while caring for everyone else.

Working with Archangel Anael

Many people first turn to Archangel Anael for help with romance, but the Venusian mysteries reach much further than finding a partner. Anael presides over every expression of love that brings us closer to God: healthy relationships, creative inspiration, hospitality, beauty, generosity and the quiet grace that makes life more fully alive.

Friday is traditionally the best day to honour Anael, especially during the planetary hour of Venus. You might light a pink or green candle, offer a simple prayer, place fresh flowers on your altar or spend time creating something beautiful. There is no need for an elaborate ritual. A thankful heart and a sincere desire to reflect God’s love are enough.

Anael is also a wonderful companion for artists, writers, musicians and anyone engaged in creative work. When inspiration seems to have dried up, ask for the grace to create faithfully without anxiety about the outcome.

Learning to Receive Grace

One of Anael’s gentlest lessons is that love must also be received. Many of us find it easier to encourage other people than to extend the same kindness to ourselves. We dismiss our gifts, magnify our faults and become our own harshest critics.

This is an area where I often find myself asking for Anael’s help. My inner critic has always been far more eloquent than my inner encourager. Over time, I’ve come to realise that humility and self-contempt are not the same thing. We honour the Divine not by belittling ourselves but by becoming good stewards of the gifts we have been given.

When our sense of self-worth is rooted in God’s love rather than in comparison with others, it becomes easier to care for ourselves without guilt and to care for others without resentment. That is the kind of balance Anael encourages. It is gentle, gracious and life-giving.

Prayer to Archangel Anael

Gracious Archangel Anael,

I ask for your guidance as I seek to grow in love, beauty and grace.

Help me to see myself and others through the eyes of Divine compassion. Where my heart has become hardened, soften it. Restore my trust in God’s goodness where fear has eclipsed love. Where I have been overly critical of myself or others, teach me the gentleness that heals.

Bless my relationships, that they may be rooted in honesty, mutual respect and kindness. Inspire my creative work, that whatever I bring into the world may be a blessing for the Highest Good.

Grant me the wisdom to know that true abundance begins within a grateful heart, and the courage to receive God’s love as freely as I am called to share it with others.

May everything I think, say and do today become an offering of love in service to the Highest Good.

Amen, and so it is.

If you’re seeking greater harmony in your relationships, longing to reconnect with your creative gifts or simply wishing to deepen your relationship with Archangel Anael, this five-card Tarot spread offers a gentle framework for prayer and reflection.

Take a few moments to centre yourself. If you wish, light a pink or green candle and say the prayer above before shuffling the cards. As you lay out the spread in a cross formation, invite Archangel Anael to illuminate the places where Divine love is already at work in your life, as well as those areas that are ready for healing and growth.

Five-card Archangel Anael Tarot spread on a cream background with pink roses and gold accents. The cross layout features five identical green-backed Tarot cards with pink heart motifs numbered 1–5 inside the hearts. The title reads "The Archangel Anael" with "Tarot Spread" beneath it. Each position is labelled: 1. The Gift, 2. The Heart, 3. The Shadow, 4. The Blessing, and 5. The Path Forward. The Angelorum.co logo appears at the bottom.

1. The Gift – What Venusian gift is Anael awakening in me at this time?

2. The Heart – Where am I being invited to give or receive love more freely?

3. The Shadow – What is preventing me from living more fully from grace, beauty or self-worth?

4. The Blessing – What blessing is unfolding as I align more closely with God’s love?

5. The Path Forward – How can I embody Anael’s guidance in my daily life?

As always, approach the cards prayerfully rather than as a means of predicting the future. Allow each card to become the starting point for a conversation with God, trusting that Anael’s role is not to replace your discernment but to help you recognise the grace that is already at work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Anael the same as Haniel?

Yes. Anael and Haniel are different transliterations of the same Hebrew name, Ḥaniel (חניאל), meaning Grace of God or Joy of God. Throughout this article, I’ve chosen to use the traditional spelling Anael because it reflects the medieval and Renaissance magical texts that form the basis of much of Western esotericism.

Is Anael an angel of Venus or the Moon?

In the Western esoteric tradition, Anael is the ruling archangel of Venus and Friday. This correspondence appears in sources such as the Ars Paulina and other classical grimoires.

The idea that Haniel rules the Moon is a much more recent development, popularised by modern angel literature. While many contemporary practitioners work successfully with those correspondences, this article follows the older Venusian tradition.

Which day is best for working with Archangel Anael?

Friday has long been regarded as Anael’s day because it is ruled by Venus. Many practitioners also choose to pray during the planetary hour of Venus, though heartfelt prayer is never limited to a particular day or hour.

Which Tarot card corresponds with Archangel Anael?

Anael is traditionally associated with The Empress, whose Venusian symbolism reflects love, beauty, creativity, abundance and the nurturing power of creation.

Can I pray to Archangel Anael for love?

Yes, but I encourage praying for far more than a romantic relationship. Anael’s ministry encompasses friendship, marriage, reconciliation, creativity, healthy self-worth and learning to give and receive love in ways that honour both God and ourselves.

Do I need to practise ceremonial magic to work with Anael?

Not at all. Although Anael appears in many medieval magical texts, a simple prayer offered with sincerity is enough. You may also choose to meditate, reflect with Tarot, spend time in nature or engage in a creative practice as a way of drawing closer to the Venusian virtues that Anael embodies.

What is the planetary hour of Venus?

In the traditional Chaldean system of planetary magic, each day is divided into twenty-four planetary hours, with each hour ruled by one of the seven classical planets. The first planetary hour after sunrise determines the ruler of the day. On a Friday, the first planetary hour after sunrise is ruled by Venus. The hour of Venus then occurs again later in the day according to the traditional planetary sequence.

Many practitioners choose to pray or perform devotional work during the planetary hour of Venus, believing it to be especially favourable for matters relating to love, beauty, creativity, harmony and reconciliation. While I enjoy working with these traditional timings, I don’t believe they are essential. A sincere prayer offered at any hour is always heard.

Final Thoughts

Archangel Anael reminds us that love is far more than an emotion. It is a way of seeing, creating and living that reflects the goodness of God in the world.

In a culture that often confuses love with possession, beauty with appearance and abundance with accumulation, Anael gently points us back to what truly matters. A kind word. A forgiving heart. A creative act offered in service. A relationship nurtured with patience and respect. These are all expressions of the Venusian path.

For me, Anael’s greatest lesson is grace. Not only the grace we extend to others, but the grace to stop measuring ourselves by impossible standards and to recognise that we, too, are beloved children of God. That is not pride. It is gratitude.

May your relationship with Archangel Anael deepen your appreciation for beauty, strengthen your capacity to love well and inspire you to bring a little more grace into the lives of everyone you meet.

Amen, and so it is.
