If you have spent any time researching the angel of Jupiter, you have probably encountered two names: Sachiel and Zadkiel. Some sources treat them as interchangeable. Others assign each name a different place within the angelic hierarchy. No wonder the correspondence has become muddled.
From now on, Angelorum will use Sachiel for the planetary angel of Jupiter and Thursday, while Zadkiel or Tzadkiel remains the archangel of Chesed and ruler of the Dominions.
This practical distinction gives us a consistent framework without demanding a verdict on whether the two names ultimately describe one intelligence or two. In this guide, we will explore Sachiel’s history, correspondences and devotional work through prayer and Tarot.

Who Is Archangel Sachiel?
Sachiel is the traditional angel of Jupiter and Thursday in the Western weekday planetary tradition. Sources vary in both spelling and rank. We find Sachiel, Saquiel, Satquiel, Sadkiel and related forms across manuscripts and printed editions. Some writers call him an angel; others call him a great angel or planetary ruler. Modern practitioners often use the title Archangel for the principal angels of the seven classical planets, and I follow that devotional convention here.
The name itself needs careful handling. Sachiel belongs to the same historical family of names as Tzedeqiel or Zadkiel, which connects with the Hebrew root for righteousness or justice. However, the spelling Sachiel does not give us a securely established Hebrew form of its own. For that reason, I would rather acknowledge the uncertainty than manufacture a tidy translation that the evidence cannot support.
Sachiel in the Western Esoteric Tradition
Medieval and Renaissance Planetary Magic
The clearest early source for Sachiel as Thursday’s angel is the Heptameron. Its Thursday section names Sachiel, Castiel and Asasiel, associates the operation with Jupiter and presents Sachiel as the day’s chief ruler. It also gives saffron as Thursday’s fumigation.
This does not mean every Renaissance authority used the same name. Agrippa assigns Zadkiel to Jupiter in Three Books of Occult Philosophy. Elsewhere, his account of Chesed describes Divine clemency flowing through the Dominions, the sphere of Jupiter and the intelligence Zadkiel.
The disagreement did not begin with modern angel books. Manuscripts carried names across Hebrew, Latin and vernacular languages, while different magical systems arranged their hierarchies in different ways. Sachiel became established in the weekday tradition, while Zadkiel became central to the Kabbalistic and Sephirothic correspondence for Chesed.
The Historical Ars Paulina
In its surviving seventeenth-century form, the historical Ars Paulina makes up the third part of the Lemegeton. Its two sections concern the rulers of the 24 hours and angels assigned to the degrees of the zodiac. It does not organise angelic practice around the same simple list of seven weekday rulers found in the Heptameron.
Several zodiacal-degree angels in the Ars Paulina bear the name Sachiel or a very similar spelling. We should not automatically identify those degree angels with the planetary ruler of Thursday. This is another example of the same name appearing at more than one level of a magical system.
For Angelorum, the Ars Paulina provides historical context rather than the source of Sachiel’s Thursday rulership. Its conjurations do not form the basis of the devotional practice in this article.
Modern Pauline-Inspired Practice
Betty St Pourcain’s modern Angel Magic: The Pauline Art of Ritual and Magic presents Sachiel as the angel of Thursday, good fortune and material assistance. Her “pact of fortune” call sign belongs to this modern system. It is not Sachiel’s seal from the Heptameron, nor should we describe it as a sigil copied from an early Ars Paulina manuscript.
I value St Pourcain’s emphasis on working with angels under Divine authority and giving thanks. And I agree with framing themes of benevolence, opportunity and responsible material support as flowing from Divine Providence rather than luck on demand.
Relationship with the Golden Dawn
The Golden Dawn assigns Tzadkiel to Chesed, the fourth Sephirah on the Tree of Life. Chesed corresponds with Jupiter, while the Chasmalim form its angelic order. Elsewhere in the system, Jupiter corresponds with Kaph and The Wheel of Fortune.
What the Golden Dawn does not appear to do is formally install Sachiel as a separate planetary archangel within that chain. Sachiel enters this article through the older weekday and planetary angel tradition. I then use the Golden Dawn’s Jupiter, Kaph and Wheel of Fortune correspondences to interpret his current.
The weekday tradition provides the angel of Thursday. The Golden Dawn supplies the Kabbalistic and Tarot language through which many modern practitioners understand Jupiter.
Is Sachiel the Same as Zadkiel?
Historically, many sources and practitioners have treated Sachiel and Zadkiel as variants of the same Jovian angel. The names share an overlapping textual history, and both carry the qualities of justice, mercy, benevolence and expansion. It would be misleading to claim that everyone has always understood them as separate beings.
Angelorum now distinguishes them by office:
Zadkiel/Tzadkiel → Archangel of Chesed and ruler of the Dominions
Sachiel → Planetary angel of Jupiter and Thursday
This convention does not settle the angels’ ontology. It simply prevents us from confusing the different levels of the correspondence system. A planetary angel, Sephirothic archangel, angelic choir, zodiacal ruler and Shem HaMephorash angel may all participate in the same current without holding the same office.
That distinction matters when we write about the Shem angels. A Shem angel may serve within the Dominions under Zadkiel while also governing degrees influenced by a particular zodiac sign or planet. Giving every Jovian layer one combined angelic label only makes the structure harder to follow.
So, are they ultimately one intelligence or two? I am content to leave that mystery open. For practical and editorial purposes, however, Angelorum will use the names consistently from this point forward.
Why Sachiel Rules Jupiter and Thursday
Jupiter, the Greater Benefic
Traditional astrology calls Jupiter the Greater Benefic. The planet signifies growth, wisdom, justice, generosity, higher education, religion, law and the opportunities that widen our field of possibility.
Expansion is not automatically good. Jupiter can enlarge excess, entitlement and overconfidence just as readily as it increases hope or opportunity. Sachiel’s benevolence therefore asks for discernment. A door opening at the right moment still requires us to decide whether it leads somewhere worth going.
Within an esoteric Christian framework, Jupiter’s blessings belong to Divine Providence. They are not prizes awarded to the spiritually superior, nor proof that God favours one person over another. Sachiel helps us pursue growth that increases our capacity to serve, share, create, teach, protect or lead wisely.

Why Thursday Is Jupiter’s Day
The seven-day angelic and planetary week assigns each day to one of the seven classical planets. Thursday belongs to Jupiter. The connection remains visible in Latin dies Iovis, the day of Jove, and in French jeudi, Italian giovedì and Spanish jueves.
English preserves the correspondence through a Germanic route. Thursday is Thor’s day: Germanic speakers used their thunder god as the nearest equivalent to Jove within the weekday system. The names changed, but the planetary place within the week remained.
The first planetary hour after sunrise on Thursday also belongs to Jupiter. Later Jupiter hours recur through the traditional Chaldean sequence, although their clock times change with sunrise, sunset and the length of the day. Planetary-hour calculators make this easy, but precise timing is optional. Heartfelt prayer does not become invalid because you missed Jupiter’s hour by seven minutes. Heaven is not a customer-service desk with a closing time.
For a simple devotional rhythm, Thursday itself is enough. Use the day to study, give generously, make a wise decision or act on an opportunity that serves a worthwhile purpose.
Archangel Sachiel and The Wheel of Fortune
In the Golden Dawn system, Jupiter corresponds with the Hebrew letter Kaph and X The Wheel of Fortune:

Kaph means the palm or hand. An open hand receives, gives and blesses. A closed hand holds and directs what it has received. That double movement makes Kaph an apt symbol for Sachiel’s current. We need openness to recognise opportunity, but we also need the capacity to handle it responsibly.
The Wheel of Fortune shows Divine order moving through changing circumstances. We cannot control every turn. Timing, chance, other people’s choices and forces larger than ourselves all shape the conditions we meet. Yet the card does not reduce us to helpless passengers. Our freedom lies in how we respond.
Sachiel’s relationship with the Wheel is therefore about more than becoming lucky. He helps us recognise a turning point, judge its value and take our place within it. When circumstances improve, gratitude keeps expansion from becoming entitlement. When the Wheel turns downwards, wisdom helps us preserve hope without denying reality.
What Does Archangel Sachiel Help With?
Sachiel’s ministry concerns wise expansion rather than guaranteed results. You may feel drawn to work with him when you need help recognising where genuine possibility exists and how to respond without abandoning your principles.
Ask for Sachiel’s assistance with:
- Recognising worthwhile opportunities.
- Expanding a business, vocation or creative project responsibly.
- Cultivating generosity without becoming careless or self-neglecting.
- Seeking justice, fair treatment or a balanced resolution.
- Pursuing higher education, theology or philosophical study.
- Developing wise, ethical leadership.
- Recovering hope after restriction or disappointment.
- Healing fear, shame or confusion around money and prosperity.
- Using influence, authority or resources for the Highest Good.
- Trusting Divine Providence while still taking practical action.
- Knowing when growth serves your calling and when “more” is merely more.
Prayer cannot guarantee money, promotion or a legal victory. Angelic help does not remove another person’s free will or cancel the material conditions of life. It may arrive as clearer judgement, timely information, renewed courage, an introduction, a fairer option or the wisdom to walk away from an opportunity that glitters but carries the wrong price.
How to Work with Archangel Sachiel
Thursday is the traditional day for working with Sachiel. If you enjoy planetary timing, begin during an hour of Jupiter, particularly the first hour after sunrise. You might light a blue or violet candle, burn a little saffron or storax incense and place The Wheel of Fortune where you can see it.
None of these tools is essential. A candle cannot compensate for a vague intention, and an expensive crystal cannot make an unwise opportunity suitable. Prayer, ethical conduct and the action you take afterwards matter far more.
Phrase your request in a way that leaves room for Divine Wisdom. Instead of demanding a particular outcome, ask to recognise and act upon the best opportunity available for the Highest Good.
A Simple Sachiel Working
- State your intention. Name the area in which you seek wise expansion, justice or opportunity. Keep it honest and specific.
- Read Psalm 112:5. “Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.”
- Pray. Ask God to send Sachiel’s assistance so that you may recognise what is truly beneficial and use it well.
- Contemplate The Wheel of Fortune. Notice what appears to be turning in your life. Ask what you can influence, what you must accept and what responsibility accompanies the opportunity before you.
- Take one practical action. Send the application, review the figures, seek qualified advice, make the introduction, begin the course or offer help to someone else.
Finish by thanking God and Sachiel. Gratitude completes the working and returns its purpose to the Highest Good.
