Hahuiah — Angel of Protection: Secrets & Tarot Spread

A luminous feminine guardian angel stands with softly outstretched wings, bathed in warm golden and ivory light against a tranquil sky. Olive branches and gentle rays of light enhance the peaceful, sacred atmosphere in a painterly Renaissance-inspired style.

Protection is often imagined as a wall that keeps danger out. Hahuiah, the Angel of Protection, teaches a different kind of protection. Rather than shielding us from every difficulty, this angel helps us stand firmly in divine truth so that jealousy, fear, projections, and the misuse of power lose their hold over us. In that sense, Hahuiah’s protection begins within.

Hahuiah watches over those who feel vulnerable, unjustly accused or far from home. This Shem HaMephorash angel has long been associated with refugees, exiles, soldiers, law enforcement and anyone seeking refuge from corruption, persecution or abuse. She also helps us recognise the subtle ways envy, resentment and comparison can erode our peace, replacing them with trust in divine justice and abundance.

The name is most commonly transliterated as Hahuiah, though you may also encounter the spellings Heheuiah and Hahehuiah in older books and different esoteric traditions. All refer to the same angel, whose name is derived from the Hebrew חהויה. In this article, I use the modern spelling Hahuiah while acknowledging the older variants you may find elsewhere.

From Hahuiah’s correspondences and Psalm to the Tarot de Marseille triad and a practical five-card Tarot spread, this guide explores how to work with the twenty-fourth Shem HaMephorash angel for protection, integrity and deeper trust in divine providence.

Hahuiah and the 4 of Cups

Hahuiah rules the second quinance of the third decan of Cancer, corresponding with the 4 of Cups in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition. This card is traditionally known as the Lord of Blended Pleasure.

The 4 of Cups from the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot

The familiar image of the 4 of Cups shows a figure sitting beneath a tree with folded arms while a hand emerges from a cloud, offering a fourth cup. It is often seen as a card of apathy, introspection or emotional withdrawal. However, it can also point to a need to step back, gain perspective and recognise the opportunities or blessings we may have overlooked.

Hahuiah adds another layer to this symbolism. She reminds us that our emotional wellbeing depends not only on what happens around us but also on how we respond to it.

The Moon’s rulership of Cancer heightens sensitivity and intuition, but it can also magnify disappointments and emotional projections. Hahuiah helps us stay grounded in truth rather than being carried away by fluctuating feelings or the negativity of others.

When the 4 of Cups appears in a Tarot reading, it may be time to pause rather than react. Hahuiah encourages us to reflect, regain our perspective and trust that God’s providence is still at work, even when we cannot yet see the bigger picture.

Three weathered Tarot de Marseille cards—Justice (VIII), The Pope (V) and The Lover (VI)—are arranged side by side on a sunlit, weathered stone surface. Delicate pale pink briar roses, rosebuds and trailing leafy stems frame the cards, creating a peaceful, contemplative atmosphere. Warm natural light enhances the aged textures of the cards and stone, while the subtle angelorum.co watermark appears centred along the bottom edge.

Hahuiah’s Tarot de Marseille Triad

One of my current areas of research explores the Hebrew letter correspondences of the Tarot de Marseille in relation to the Shem HaMephorash angels. Rather than assigning a single Major Arcana to each angel, I examine the Hebrew letters that make up the angel’s Divine Name. Together, these letters form a Tarot de Marseille triad that offers additional insight into the angel’s spiritual ministry.

Hahuiah’s meditation mantra, חהו (Cheh–Heh–Vah), corresponds to Justice, The Pope and The Lover in the Sephardic Kabbalah Tarot de Marseille system I learned from Michel Perez Rizzi in The 72 Names of God.

Chet — VIII Justice

Justice invites us to examine where comparison has distorted our perception. When we measure our worth against others, jealousy and resentment can quietly take root. We begin to believe that another person’s success somehow diminishes our own. Hahuiah reveals this as an illusion, reminding us that Divine justice is founded on truth rather than competition.

Heh — V The Pope

The Pope represents spiritual guidance and alignment with Divine wisdom. Here, Hahuiah teaches that real security comes not from status, possessions or recognition but from living according to higher principles. As we grow in humility and integrity, we become less vulnerable to the projections and negativity of others.

Vav — VI The Lover

The Lover reminds us that love always involves a choice. We can continue to live from fear and comparison, or we can choose gratitude, generosity and trust. Hahuiah encourages us to celebrate the blessings of others without feeling diminished ourselves, recognising that God’s abundance is never exhausted.

The Message of Hahuiah’s Tarot de Marseille Triad

Hahuiah’s Tarot de Marseille triad reveals a movement from comparison to communion. Justice exposes the illusions created when we measure ourselves against others. The Pope restores our relationship with Divine wisdom, reminding us that our worth comes from God rather than from external validation. The Lover then presents the choice to respond with gratitude instead of envy, trust instead of fear, and love instead of rivalry.

This journey also sheds light on Hahuiah’s association with the 4 of Cups. While the Rider–Waite–Smith image is often interpreted as emotional withdrawal or dissatisfaction, Hahuiah encourages a more discerning response. Rather than becoming consumed by what others have, the 4 of Cups becomes an invitation to turn inward, recognise the blessings already present, and receive the quiet gifts that Divine grace is continually offering. In this way, the Tarot de Marseille triad deepens the meaning of the 4 of Cups by showing that true protection begins with a heart that is anchored in gratitude rather than comparison.

Working with Hahuiah

Although Hahuiah is the primary guardian angel for those born between 17 and 22 July, anyone may call upon her guidance through prayer, meditation, Psalm recitation or mantra chanting.

Before beginning, take a few moments to become still and consciously place yourself in God’s presence. Pray Psalm 33:18, asking for Hahuiah’s protection and guidance. Or you may chant the mantra Cheh-Heh-Vah while meditating on the Hebrew letters חהו, allowing your heart and mind to rest quietly in God’s providence.

Many people find it helpful to repeat the mantra before a difficult conversation, a legal matter or any situation where they seek protection, wisdom or the courage to act with integrity.

You can also work with Hahuiah through the Tarot, either by meditating on her associated cards or by reading with the Angel of Protection Tarot Spread below. As always, begin with prayer and ask God to bless your reading. Journal any insights you receive and revisit them over the following days as your understanding deepens.

Above all, approach Hahuiah with humility rather than expectation. Like all the Shem HaMephorash angels, her role is not to replace your relationship with God but to help you grow in wisdom, integrity and trust as you walk your spiritual path.

Final Thoughts

Hahuiah reminds us that true protection is not found in controlling every circumstance but in learning to trust God’s providence. Her guardianship does not promise a life free from challenges. Rather, it offers the wisdom, courage and integrity needed to walk through them without losing sight of what is right.

Whether you were born under Hahuiah’s guardianship or feel drawn to work with her this time, her presence offers a quiet assurance that no sincere prayer goes unheard. As you deepen your relationship with this angel through prayer, Psalm recitation, meditation or her mantra, may you discover that the safest refuge has always been the Divine Presence itself.

May Hahuiah watch over you, strengthen your heart and guide your steps in truth, peace and steadfast trust. Amen, and so it is.
