Melahel, the Angel of Natural Medicine, snuck up on me this morning.

Before drinking my usual glass of water, I asked God to help me become someone who brings the light of the Divine into the world. At the time, I hadn’t yet decided that today’s writing would focus on Melahel. It was only afterwards, while revisiting Michel Perez Rizzi’s work on the Shem HaMephorash, that I discovered he describes Melahel as the angel who helps us “share the light” and “make a covenant with God.”

For me, it felt like a gentle confirmation that this was the right angel to spend time with today.

According to Michel Perez Rizzi, Melahel helps us “share the light” and “make a covenant with God.” At first glance, these ideas might seem unrelated to herbal medicine or the healing arts. Yet the more I reflected on them, the more they seemed to reveal the deeper purpose of healing.

Every genuine act of healing becomes an opportunity to reflect Divine light into the world. Whether we are caring for someone who is ill, preparing nourishing food, tending a garden, studying medicinal plants or simply offering words of encouragement, we become participants in God’s ongoing work of restoration.

Making a covenant with God is not about earning Divine favour. Rather, it is a conscious decision to cooperate with Divine wisdom and align our lives with the healing order woven into Creation. Melahel invites us to become faithful stewards of that gift, bringing hope where there is despair, wisdom where there is confusion and gentle healing wherever life has become wounded.

Melahel rules the first quinance of the third decan of Cancer, corresponding with the 4 of Cups in the Rider–Waite–Smith tradition. This card is traditionally known as the Lord of Blended Pleasure, a title that hints at both the blessings and the challenges of emotional fulfilment.

The image of the 4 of Cups often suggests withdrawal, introspection or emotional weariness. The figure sits beneath a tree with folded arms, seemingly unaware of the cup being offered from above. It is a picture of someone who has become so absorbed in their inner world that they struggle to recognise the grace still flowing towards them.

Melahel’s presence reminds us that healing often begins with a change of perception. Before circumstances can change, our hearts must awaken to the possibilities that already surround us. This is where hope becomes a form of medicine. Rather than denying pain or disappointment, Melahel gently helps us lift our eyes towards the gifts we may have overlooked.

His connection with natural medicine deepens this symbolism. Just as the healing properties of a plant may remain hidden until we learn how to recognise and prepare it, Divine help is often present long before we become aware of it. Melahel encourages us to slow down, reconnect with Creation and trust that God has already provided much of what we need for healing and renewal.

When the 4 of Cups appears in a Tarot reading, it can be an invitation to pause rather than a warning that something is wrong. It asks us to look beyond discouragement, receive the grace being offered and rediscover the quiet hope that allows healing to begin.

Melahel’s Tarot de Marseille Triad

One of my current areas of research explores the Hebrew letter correspondences of the Tarot de Marseille in relation to the Shem HaMephorash angels. Rather than assigning a single Major Arcana to each angel, I examine the Hebrew letters that make up the angel’s Divine Name. Together, these letters form a Tarot de Marseille triad that offers additional insight into the angel’s spiritual ministry.

Melahel’s meditation mantra, מלה (Mem Lamed Hei), corresponds to Arcanum XIII, The Hanged Man (XII) and The Pope (V) in the Sephardic Kabbalah Tarot de Marseille system I learned from Michel Perez Rizzi.

Mem — Arcanum XIII

Healing often begins with transformation. Before new life can emerge, something old may need to be released. This could mean letting go of unhealthy habits, destructive thought patterns or even an identity that no longer reflects who God is calling us to become. Melahel reminds us that endings are not always losses. Sometimes they are the doorway to deeper healing.

Lamed — The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man teaches the wisdom of surrender. Rather than forcing healing to happen according to our own timetable, Melahel encourages us to trust the Divine process.
