Archangel Samael hasn’t always been Tuesday’s angel on Angelorum.

For a long time, I believed that role belonged to Archangel Camael.

If you’ve spent any time studying angelology, you’ll probably understand why. Some books assign Mars and Tuesday to Camael (also spelt Kamael or Chamuel), while others assign them to Samael. Still others treat the two names as interchangeable, even though their histories are quite different.

The more I studied, however, the less convincing that explanation became. These aren’t simply different spellings of the same name. Camael is generally understood to mean “He Who Sees God” or “He Who Seeks God,” while Samael has traditionally been interpreted as “Poison of God” and “Severity of God.” Once I understood that these names point towards very different understandings of the angel’s role, I found it increasingly difficult to treat them as interchangeable.

After exploring the traditions for myself, I eventually settled on Archangel Samael as the planetary ruler of Mars and Tuesday for Angelorum. Rather than quietly changing the name, however, I wanted to explain why. This article is the result of that journey.

Why Samael Resonates with My Middle Path

My interest in Samael isn’t purely historical.

Unlike many angels whose identities remain relatively straightforward across traditions, Samael occupies a liminal space. He appears in Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah, ceremonial magic, Christian folklore and Left-Hand Path teachings, often interpreted in very different ways. Some regard him as a holy archangel of Divine severity. Others associate him with the adversarial role of the Accuser or even identify him with Satan, despite those traditions being far from unanimous.

My Middle Path

As someone who follows a Christo-Hekatean Path, I find myself naturally drawn to figures who resist simplistic definitions. My own spiritual journey has taught me that truth often emerges through careful discernment rather than certainty, and that we don’t have to reject one tradition to learn from another.

For me, the Middle Path isn’t about blending different religions into one or pretending that all traditions say the same thing. It means allowing ancient voices to speak for themselves, listening carefully, weighing the evidence and being willing to change my mind when the sources point in a different direction. That’s exactly what happened with Samael.

Perhaps that’s why I find him so compelling. He reminds us that spiritual maturity isn’t about avoiding paradox. Sometimes it means having the courage to sit with complexity until a deeper understanding begins to emerge.

Rather than trying to squeeze the many traditions surrounding Samael into a single interpretation, we’ll explore what the ancient sources actually say, why he became associated with Mars and Tuesday, and how we can approach this powerful angel with discernment, courage and respect.

Samael in Jewish Tradition

One reason Archangel Samael is such a controversial angel is that there is no single universally accepted portrait of him in Jewish tradition. Instead, his character develops over many centuries, with different texts emphasising different aspects of his role.

In some sources, Samael appears as a mighty angel who carries out God’s judgement. In others, he functions as an accuser, testing humanity much as Satan does in the Book of Job. Elsewhere, he is associated with the Angel of Death, acting not as an independent force of evil but as an agent carrying out the Divine will.

These portrayals may seem contradictory at first, but they share one important feature: Samael never acts outside God’s sovereignty. Whether administering judgement, testing humanity or bringing earthly life to its appointed end, he remains subject to Divine authority.

This understanding differs significantly from the later Christian concept of the Devil as God’s ultimate adversary. In Jewish thought, even the most severe angelic powers ultimately exist within the order established by God.

Poison of God or Severity of God?

This is one of the reasons I prefer the interpretation “Severity of God” alongside the more familiar “Poison of God.” While the latter captures Samael’s fearsome reputation, the former reminds us that severity can also be medicinal.

A surgeon’s knife wounds to heal. Fire destroys what is corrupt so that new life can emerge. In much the same way, Samael’s severity can be understood as a force that cuts away illusion, complacency and injustice so that spiritual growth becomes possible.

That doesn’t make Samael an easy angel to approach, nor should it. His ministry calls for courage, discipline and an honest willingness to confront the parts of ourselves that resist transformation.

Samael in Kabbalah and Western Esotericism

As Kabbalah developed during the medieval period, Samael’s role became even more complex. Rather than appearing solely as an angel of judgement, he came to be associated with Gevurah, the sephirah of strength, discipline and Divine severity on the Tree of Life.

Gevurah is often misunderstood as harsh or punitive. In reality, it represents the power that establishes boundaries, upholds justice and cuts away whatever prevents spiritual growth. Without Gevurah, kindness can become indulgence and compassion can lack discernment. Together with Chesed (Mercy), Gevurah helps maintain the balance upon which all creation depends.

Later Western esoteric traditions built upon these Kabbalistic ideas, linking Samael with the planet Mars, the element of Fire and the day Tuesday. Mars symbolises courage, decisive action, discipline and the willingness to confront challenges rather than avoid them. These qualities made Samael a natural patron for spiritual warriors seeking strength, protection and perseverance.

At the same time, other Western traditions increasingly assigned Camael to Gevurah and Mars instead. Whether this reflects the development of parallel traditions, attempts to avoid Samael’s darker reputation or simply evolving systems of correspondence remains a matter of debate. This is one reason you’ll still find both names used in modern books on angel magic and ceremonial Kabbalah.

The Angelorum Tradition

For my own work on Angelorum, I’ve chosen to follow the tradition that associates Archangel Samael with Mars and Tuesday while acknowledging that sincere students may encounter different correspondences elsewhere. Rather than insisting that one tradition is entirely right and another entirely wrong, I believe it’s more helpful to understand how these traditions developed and why they sometimes diverge.

Samael and Mars

Samael’s association with Mars is one of the oldest and most enduring aspects of his tradition. Across Jewish mystical writings, Kabbalah and later Western esoteric systems, Mars represents the active principle of Divine severity. Rather than symbolising violence for its own sake, it reflects the courage to uphold justice, establish healthy boundaries and act decisively whenever we need to take action.

In astrology, Mars governs our capacity for initiative, determination and self-assertion. It is the force that helps us move from intention to action. Like every planetary influence, however, Mars can be constructive or destructive. Balanced Mars gives courage and perseverance; unbalanced Mars can manifest as anger, aggression or impulsiveness.

This balanced understanding is important when working with Archangel Samael. His association with Mars isn’t an invitation to dominate others but a reminder that spiritual strength requires both courage and self-discipline. True power is exercised first over ourselves.

Samael and Tuesday

Tuesday takes its English name from Tiw’s Day, honouring the Norse god Týr, a deity associated with courage, justice and warfare. In the Romance languages, however, the day is named after Mars (mardi, martes, martedì), preserving its direct connection with the Roman god of war.

As astrology, Kabbalah and ceremonial magic developed, each day of the week came to be associated with one of the seven classical planets and its ruling intelligence or archangel. Tuesday naturally became associated with Mars and, in the tradition followed on Angelorum, with Archangel Samael.

For those who enjoy devotional practice, Tuesday can be a wonderful day to pray for courage, perseverance, protection and the strength to act with integrity. Rather than seeking victory over others, Samael encourages us to overcome fear, exercise wise judgement and stand firmly in the service of God.

Samael in Tarot

Archangel Samael’s primary Tarot correspondence is The Tower, a card traditionally associated with the planet Mars in the Golden Dawn system of correspondences. The connection isn’t based on the earliest Tarot decks but developed through a gradual layering of Tarot, astrology and Kabbalah within the Western esoteric tradition.

At first glance, the Tower may seem an unexpected card for an angel. It is often seen as a card of upheaval, disaster, accidents and the collapse of established structures. Yet its deeper message is one of liberation. Whatever falls away didn’t stand on a secure foundation to begin with.

This symbolism reflects the highest expression of Mars. Its purpose is to provide the courage to act decisively, remove obstacles and defend what is true. The Tower expresses that same force in dramatic form, sweeping away illusion so that something stronger and more authentic can take its place.

For me, this is also where the interpretation “Severity of God” becomes especially meaningful. Samael’s role is to participate in the work of correction and renewal, even when that requires the destruction of whatever has outlived its purpose.

Whenever the Tower appears in a reading, I don’t automatically see disaster. More often, I see an invitation to trust God’s transforming work and find the courage to rebuild on firmer spiritual foundations. Seen through the lens of Samael, The Tower becomes less a card of catastrophe than one of courageous renewal.

Working with Archangel Samael

Although Samael’s reputation can seem intimidating at first, I don’t believe this angel seeks to frighten us. His ministry is one of courage, discipline and truth. He appears whenever we have to face difficult realities, establish healthy boundaries or act with integrity despite fear.

Tuesday is traditionally regarded as Samael’s day and can be a particularly meaningful time for prayer, meditation or Tarot work. You may also wish to light a red candle as a symbol of Mars’ fiery energy, although this is entirely optional. What matters most is approaching Samael with sincerity, humility and a genuine desire for spiritual growth.

Rather than asking Samael to fight our battles for us, I find it more helpful to ask for the strength to face them ourselves. His guidance encourages us to overcome the enemy within—fear, pride, resentment, self-deception and every habit that keeps us from living with courage and authenticity.

If you work with crystals, colours or herbs as devotional aids, you might choose red or orange candles, Bloodstone or Carnelian, or warming herbs such as cinnamon and ginger. These traditional correspondences are intended to support prayer and contemplation rather than replace them.

Above all, Samael reminds us that genuine strength isn’t measured by power over others but by mastery of ourselves. When we cultivate discipline, courage and discernment, we become better equipped to serve both our communities and the greater good.

Prayer

Mighty Archangel Samael, Angel of Divine Severity and Spiritual Strength,

Grant me the courage to face truth without fear, the discipline to walk my chosen path with integrity and the wisdom to recognise what must be released so that new life may emerge.

Strengthen my resolve when I grow weary, help me establish healthy boundaries with compassion and guide my actions so that they always serve justice rather than pride.

May every challenge become an opportunity for growth, every ending prepare the way for renewal, and every step draw me closer to the truth.

Amen, and so it is.

Frequently Asked Questions About Archangel Samael

Is Samael a fallen angel?

Not according to mainstream Jewish tradition. While Samael is sometimes portrayed as an accuser, the Angel of Death or an angel of Divine severity, he remains subject to God’s authority. Later Christian, occult and Left-Hand Path traditions developed a wide variety of interpretations, which is one reason Samael has become such a controversial figure.

Is Samael the same angel as Camael?

Some modern authors treat Samael and Camael (also spelled Kamael or Chamuel) as the same angel, while others distinguish them. After studying the historical traditions, I’ve chosen to treat them as separate angelic beings. Their names have different meanings, and the older sources don’t convince me that they are simply alternative spellings of the same archangel.

Why is Samael associated with Mars?

Within Kabbalistic and Western esoteric traditions, Mars symbolises courage, discipline, justice and decisive action. These qualities resonate strongly with Samael’s role as an angel of Divine severity and spiritual strength, making Mars his traditional planetary correspondence.

Why is Tuesday dedicated to Samael?

In the planetary week, Tuesday corresponds with Mars. The tradition followed on Angelorum associates Samael with Mars and therefore with Tuesday, making it an ideal day for prayer, meditation and Tarot work with this archangel.

Is Archangel Samael connected with the Tower Tarot card?

Yes, in the Golden Dawn system of correspondences, the Tower is attributed to Mars. Although this association developed long after the earliest Tarot decks, I find it an especially meaningful correspondence because The Tower represents the dismantling of false foundations so that truth and renewal can emerge.

Can I pray to Archangel Samael?

Yes. If you feel drawn to Samael’s ministry, you can ask for courage, discernment, protection, healthy boundaries and the strength to face difficult truths. As with all angelic work, I recommend approaching prayer with humility, sincerity and the intention to align yourself with the Divine will.

Why do some traditions associate Samael with Satan?

Certain Jewish mystical texts and later esoteric traditions identify Samael with the role of the Accuser or connect him with Satan in various ways. Other traditions present Samael as a holy archangel acting entirely within God’s sovereignty. Rather than choosing one interpretation and dismissing the others, this article explores the historical development of these traditions so readers can understand how they arose.

Should I be afraid of working with Samael?

I don’t believe so. Samael’s reputation can appear intimidating because he is associated with judgement, discipline and transformation rather than comfort. Yet these qualities are often necessary for spiritual growth. If you approach this archangel with respect, humility and discernment, Samael’s guidance can be deeply strengthening.
