This Scorpio New Moon Tarot spread invites us to meet change with faith, drawing on Christian symbolism in the Rider–Waite–Smith Death card. At its heart stands the bishop: a figure we might see as offering prayer and reassurance before the mystery of death.
The New Moon provides a recurring pause for beginnings. What are we ready to relinquish? Where do we need courage? Who can help us take the next step?
You can return to this practice each Scorpio New Moon, or whenever you find yourself at a threshold.

Scorpio and the Death Card
In the Golden Dawn system of Tarot correspondences, Scorpio is associated with XIII Death. Mortality, transformation and renewal provide themes for contemplation as we begin another lunar cycle.
For this practice, I use the Moon’s rhythm as an occasion for prayerful reflection. The focus is on how we respond to change and seek wisdom for the life before us.
Christian faith brings the hope of resurrection to our encounter with Death. We can acknowledge sorrow and uncertainty while trusting that our lives remain held in God’s love.
One figure in Pamela Colman Smith’s illustration has recently drawn my attention: the bishop standing before the approaching rider.
Is the Bishop Bargaining with Death?
In Tarot circles, I have heard the bishop contrasted with the child a couple of times. The bishop is described as negotiating with death because he is afraid. The child supposedly accepts death as natural and welcomes it with open arms.
I am not convinced that this contrast tells the whole story.
In The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, A. E. Waite describes a prelate awaiting his end with clasped hands. He does not say that the bishop is bargaining or identify fear as the meaning of his gesture.
Clasped hands can express prayer, supplication or acceptance. Even if fear is present, prayer does not become less faithful because the person praying is frightened.
Nor does the child’s apparent openness require us to cast the bishop as someone who has failed to understand.
A Shepherd at the Threshold
What I see now is a bishop greeting death on behalf of the people in his care. His presence helps the child feel safe before a mystery neither of them can fully comprehend.
The bishop cannot prevent death. He can remain present, pray and bear witness to hope. With the king fallen nearby, I see spiritual leadership finding its purpose in service.
That speaks to me of pastoral courage. We do not need to understand every mystery before offering someone our steady presence. Faith can mean staying beside another person when explanations have reached their limit.
At the Scorpio New Moon, the bishop invites us to consider what or who helps us feel safe enough to face change. For whom might we become that reassuring presence?
Making Room for New Life
In John 12:24, Jesus speaks of a grain of wheat falling into the earth and dying before it bears fruit. These words concern His approaching death and open into a teaching about following Him.
For our reflection, they offer a question: what might need to change so that our lives become more fruitful in love?
Perhaps we need to relinquish resentment, loosen our grip on control or accept support. The beginning may be small. We can entrust it to Christ.
Scorpio New Moon Tarot Spread
Begin with a simple prayer like the one below (or use your own words):
God, guide my attention towards truth and love. Help me meet change with faith, receive support and offer care. Amen.
You may wish to place a Death card from a separate deck beside your reading as a contemplation card. Shuffle your reading deck and draw six.

- The Threshold: What change needs my honest attention?
- The Release: What pattern am I ready to relinquish?
- The Fear: What makes this beginning difficult?
- The Shepherd: What support can help me meet it with faith?
- The Child: Where can I practise a more trusting openness?
- The First Step: What loving action can I take now?
Consider the images through prayer and discernment. Choose one small action to carry into the coming days.
