Mikael, the 42nd Shem HaMephorash angel, is associated with truth, order and responsible leadership. His guidance invites us to act with integrity, especially when recognising the truth asks something of us.

Sometimes we know that a conversation is overdue or that a familiar arrangement needs to change. Yet knowing and doing can remain some distance apart. Mikael helps us bring these matters into prayer and find the courage to respond.

His connection with the 4 of Swords offers a useful starting point: become still enough to see clearly. The Tarot de Marseille trio then takes us through revelation, recognition and courageous action.

Who Is Mikael?

Mikael’s Divine attribute is Virtue of God. His name is also rendered Who Is Like God?

The Hebrew letters מיכ form the 42nd three-letter Divine Name: Mem–Yod–Khaf. For meditation, I use the name mantra Meh-Yoh-Khah. Mikael is the angel’s name; addressing him in prayer and meditating on the Divine Name are related but distinct practices.

Within this series, Mikael belongs to the Choir of Virtues, under Archangel Michael, and is associated with Tiphereth. Mikael appears here as the 42nd Shem angel, while Michael appears separately as the choir’s ruler.

In La Science Cabalistique, Lenain associates Mikael with political affairs, diplomacy, the protection of rulers and safe travel. His account also concerns uncovering conspiracies and opposing the spread of false information.

Angel of Integrity is the title I use here to bring these themes into everyday life. We exercise responsibility whenever our choices affect others. Mikael invites us to use that influence fairly.

Mikael and the 4 of Swords

In the Golden Dawn system, the 4 of Swords corresponds with Jupiter in Libra and bears the title Lord of Rest from Strife.

Jupiter brings faith, generosity and a wider perspective. Libra concerns fairness, proportion and the careful weighing of different viewpoints. Together, they suggest the understanding that becomes possible when we step back from conflict.

In the RWS image, a knight’s effigy rests inside a chapel, hands joined in prayer. Three swords hang above the figure, while a fourth lies horizontally along the tomb.

That image feels particularly fitting for Mikael. Before we decide what justice requires, we may need to lay down our immediate reactions and allow our thoughts to settle.

His Sun and Saturn pairing adds themes of clarity, responsibility and structure. These angelic planetary associations sit alongside the card’s separate Golden Dawn attribution.

Mikael shares this decan with Hahahel, the Angel of Mission. Hahahel emphasises spiritual vocation and the inner life. Mikael helps us give our understanding practical expression through organisation, diplomacy and responsible leadership.

Mikael and the Courage to Reveal Hidden Truth

In The 72 Names of God, Michel Perez Rizzi’s Sephardic Kabbalah Tarot de Marseille system gives Mikael the theme Reveal the Hidden. His corresponding triad is XIII Death, X Wheel of Fortune and XI Strength.

Rizzi connects these cards with seeing the truth and finding the courage to face it. The movement begins with uncovering what has been concealed, then asks us to integrate that understanding through conscious action.

Mem — XIII Death: Clearing What Conceals the Truth

The first letter, Mem, corresponds with XIII Death.

The scythe is the instrument that exposes what lies beneath the dark soil. What has remained concealed becomes available for recognition and transformation.

Rizzi draws a visual connection between the scythe and the descending figure on the neighbouring Wheel. This links the clearing work of Death with the distortions explored in the next card.

In everyday life, this might mean questioning an explanation we have repeated for years. Perhaps we have been excusing an arrangement that leaves us exhausted. Perhaps a belief no longer fits what we have learned.

The first movement is to make room for a more honest understanding. We bring what we recognise before God and allow our perspective to change.

Yod — X Wheel of Fortune: Recognising Concealment and Revelation

The second letter, Yod, corresponds with X Wheel of Fortune.

The descending figure represents that which is hidden or unconscious, including distortions created by the ego. The ascending figure represents revelation: truth coming into awareness.

The Wheel helps us recognise how these movements operate within our lives. A repeated reaction may reveal an assumption we have never examined.

We might keep interpreting disagreement as rejection, for example. Once we notice the pattern, we can ask whether that interpretation fits each situation.

There may also be a recurring difficulty that calls for an external change. Honest reflection helps us distinguish our own contribution from circumstances we cannot control.

Khaf — XI Strength: Finding the Courage to Respond

The third letter, Khaf, corresponds with XI Strength.

Strength supplies the conscious effort that turns the Wheel’s crank and activates the ascending figure. Revelation becomes something we work with.

The lion brings courage into this process. We begin to integrate what has become clear and direct our energy accordingly.

That can be harder than the initial insight.

We may recognise that a conversation is overdue but still dread having it. We might understand a harmful habit yet struggle to change our response.

Strength invites a steady, deliberate action. This could mean apologising, asking for clarification, changing a plan or setting a boundary.

The woman’s composed relationship with the lion also suggests that courage can remain gentle. We can face a difficult truth and respond with consideration.

Bringing the Trio Back to the 4 of Swords

Death clears what conceals the truth. The Wheel reveals the movement between unconscious patterns and recognition. Strength helps us act on what we have understood.

The 4 of Swords gives this process a place of stillness.

With Jupiter in Libra, the Lord of Rest from Strife invites us to seek a wider and fairer perspective. Prayer allows us to examine our motives and consider the people affected by our decisions.

This is where Mikael’s integrity becomes practical. Having recognised something important, how will we respond?

We might need more information, a conversation or a change in priorities. Sometimes the next responsible step is to rest before deciding.
