Tropical vs. Sidereal Astrology—and the winner is…
As more people become aware that traditional Western (Tropical) Astrology no longer aligns with the actual positions of the stars—and with technology making it easier than ever for laypersons to track celestial movements—will we see a shift toward Sidereal (aka Real Sky/True Sky) Astrology, or do both systems have a place? Having worked with both for some time, I believe I have an answer to that question.
What’s the Difference Between Tropical and Sidereal Astrology?
First, it’s important to understand the fundamental difference between the two systems.
- Tropical Astrology is based on the seasons and the position of the Sun relative to the Earth’s equinoxes. It remains fixed, meaning Aries season always begins around March 21st, regardless of the actual position of the stars.
- Sidereal Astrology, on the other hand, aligns with the actual constellations, taking into account the gradual shift caused by the precession of the equinoxes. Some who use this system also include Ophiuchus, the 13th sign located between Scorpio and Sagittarius.
This precessional drift is why many people who check their Sidereal chart for the first time are surprised to find their Sun sign has changed. The constellations have shifted by roughly 24 degrees over the past 2,000 years, creating a noticeable gap between the two systems. So, for instance, in Tropical Astrology, my Sun sign is Capricorn but in Sidereal Astrology it’s Sagittarius, However, my Moon at 26 degrees of Pisces remains in Pisces in both systems.

Which System Is More Accurate?
So which system is “right”? In my experience, both systems work, but they function in different ways:
- Tropical Astrology, rooted in seasonal cycles, is deeply connected to earthly rhythms and psychological archetypes. It excels at describing personality traits, psychological patterns, and life themes.
- Sidereal Astrology, being more astronomically precise, seems to provide deeper insights into our soul’s path and karmic influences.
How Can You Work With Both Systems?
Rather than choosing one over the other, I see them as complementary.
- Tropical Astrology offers an excellent framework for personal development, goal setting, and understanding day-to-day life events.
- Sidereal Astrology, with its cosmic precision, speaks more to the soul’s evolution and higher purpose.
Ultimately, astrology is a language, and like any language, different dialects can express truth in different ways. Whether you resonate more with Tropical or Sidereal Astrology, both provide valuable insights when approached with an open mind.

By adding the two cards for each system together, we derive deeper insights:
