The lion is not an enemy to conquer but a part of our nature that longs to be loved, understood and wisely guided.

This is why Strength is the great card of heart-centred power. It reminds us that instinct, passion and desire are not obstacles on the spiritual path. They become allies when brought into harmony with Divine Love.

Tarot de Marseille XI – La Force

The Rider–Waite–Smith and Tarot de Marseille traditions assign different Hebrew letters to Strength. I follow the Golden Dawn attribution of Teth (ט) when working with the Rider–Waite–Smith deck. In the historical Sephardic Kabbalah tradition, I associate La Force with Khaf (כ).

Rather than trying to harmonise different esoteric systems, I present each tradition according to its own symbolic framework. I have found that each one reveals a different facet of this beautiful archetype, allowing the card to speak with its own voice instead of forcing it into a single interpretive system.

Esoteric Meaning

The Golden Dawn gave Strength the esoteric title Daughter of the Flaming Sword. At first glance, that can seem like an odd choice. Where is the flaming sword? Where is the battle?

Look more closely.

The woman carries no weapon. She doesn’t need one. Love accomplishes what force never can.

The Flaming Sword reveals Divine Wisdom at work in creation. Strength shows us what happens when we allow that wisdom to shape our hearts. We stop reacting. We stop trying to prove ourselves, and we no longer waste energy fighting battles that love can resolve more completely.

Leo gives this card its warmth, generosity and creative fire. Fire can warm a home or burn it to the ground. The difference lies in how we tend it.

The same holds true for our passions. Desire can inspire us to create, to protect and to love with our whole hearts. Left unchecked, the very same energy can feed pride, anger or the need to dominate. Strength never asks us to extinguish that fire. It asks us to tend it wisely.

Across the Tarot Traditions

Rider–Waite–Smith

Pamela Colman Smith portrays a young woman gently closing, or perhaps opening, the lion’s jaws. She doesn’t struggle with the lion or attempt to overpower it. Instead, she approaches it with complete calm, suggesting that love possesses a strength greater than fear.

Above her head floats the lemniscate, the symbol of eternity. We first encountered it above the Magician’s head, where it spoke of infinite potential. Here, it reminds us that true strength flows from an eternal source rather than the passing emotions of the moment.

Following the Golden Dawn tradition, Strength corresponds with Leo and the Hebrew letter Teth (ט). Teth means “serpent,” reminding us that the same life force can either awaken us or consume us. Everything depends on how we direct it.

Thoth Tarot

Aleister Crowley renamed this card Lust, a title that often surprises people until they spend time with Lady Frieda Harris’s extraordinary artwork.

This isn’t lust in the modern sense of uncontrolled desire. Crowley used the word in its older meaning of wholehearted passion for life. His woman rides triumphantly upon the Beast, not to conquer it but to rejoice in the creative power that flows through all creation.

Although I don’t use Crowley’s title in my own practice, I appreciate the reminder that spirituality doesn’t ask us to reject our passions. It asks us to dedicate them to something higher.

Crowley retained the Golden Dawn correspondences of Leo and Teth while expanding the symbolism through Hermetic Qabalah, alchemy and Thelemic philosophy.

Tarot de Marseille

The Marseille image strips the card back to its essentials. A woman stands beside a lion, her hands resting upon its jaws. Without the lemniscate or the floral symbolism of the Rider–Waite–Smith deck, our attention falls entirely on the relationship between the two figures.

In the historical Sephardic Kabbalah tradition, I associate La Force with the Hebrew letter Khaf (כ). Khaf means “the palm of the hand,” an image that feels beautifully at home here. The open hand can bless, comfort, heal and guide. It can also grasp, strike or control. Strength invites us to choose the open hand.

Across all three traditions, the message remains remarkably consistent. True strength doesn’t depend on force. It grows wherever wisdom, courage and compassion work together.

Angels Connected with Strength

Three angels help illuminate different aspects of Strength.

Verchiel is the traditional zodiacal angel of Leo. Whenever this card appears during a season of growth, Verchiel encourages us to live wholeheartedly. Leo longs to create, to celebrate life and to bring warmth wherever it goes. At its highest, this isn’t a need for admiration but a generous desire to encourage others to shine as well.

Archangel Michael rules the Sun, Leo’s planetary ruler. Michael lends courage whenever fear tempts us to abandon our calling or compromise our integrity. He reminds us that true strength never depends on intimidation or domination. It grows from unwavering trust in the Divine and the willingness to stand for what is right, even when the cost feels high.

My UPG

My own Angelic Tarot correspondence for Strength is Archangel Ariel.

Ariel’s name means Lion of God, or Lioness of God, making this correspondence feel especially meaningful. The lion in the Strength card isn’t a symbol of brute force. It speaks of the courage that awakens when we remember who we are in the Divine. We no longer need to prove our worth because we already know we belong.

Many people know Ariel as an angel of nature, and that has certainly been my experience. I also know Ariel as an angel of courageous authenticity. Whenever I meditate with Strength, Ariel gently encourages me to stop hiding the gifts the Divine has placed within me and to offer them freely in loving service.

Whichever angel you feel drawn to work with, remember that angels never diminish our humanity. They help us become more fully ourselves by bringing every part of our lives into harmony with Divine Love.

How to Work With Strength

Work with this card and Archangel Verchiel on a Sunday, especially at sunrise or during the solar hour. Light a gold or yellow candle. Burn a little frankincense or rosemary if you have some. Hold a piece of sunstone, citrine or tiger’s eye as you pray for the courage to live wholeheartedly.

Spend a few minutes with the card. Notice the woman’s calm expression. Notice the lion’s willing response. Ask yourself where love could achieve more than force in your own life.

You could also pray with Psalm 19, allowing its solar imagery to remind you that every gift we receive comes from the Divine and exists to reflect Divine glory rather than our own. If you’re seeking courage for a particular situation, repeat this simple prayer throughout the day:
