This is the second post in the Biblical Tarot series we started on Monday. In the first post, we looked at The Soul (Fool) card. I also shared my thoughts on The Bible in general as well as what identifying as a Christian Sophianic Witch means to me. With The Soul Card post, we laid a foundation of grace and freedom to be true to our soul essence. Now, by looking at Moses The Magician, we will address the power within us that some call magic. Furthermore, we will look at how we can use this divine power in service to Source/the Higher Self from a metaphysical point of view.
Why Moses is a Perfect Archetypal Match for The Magician Card
1. Mastery of Elements
The Egyptian Mystery Schools were renowned centers of wisdom, where priests and initiates explored the secrets of alchemy, astrology, and other mystical sciences. According to esoteric lore, Moses, raised in Pharaoh’s court, had access to these teachings. As a prince of Egypt, he was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians.
Consequently, this education most likely included advanced spiritual and magical knowledge. This magic was in itself neutral and could be used for material or spiritual ends. Moses represents the Magician (or part of the self, i.e. Higher Will) who uses magic for soul alchemy. On the other hand, the magic of the court magicians of the Pharaoh represents magic in service to the ego-mind.
2. Transformation and Creation
The Magician is depicted with tools representing the four Tarot suits, symbolising the ability to transform and create. Moses exemplifies transformative power by performing many miracles. For instance, he turns his staff into a serpent and changes the Nile’s water to blood. Incidentally, these were both miracles that the court magicians could match.
3. As Above, So Below – A Conduit of Divine Will
Occult traditions also contend that Moses integrated the mystical teachings of Egypt with the monotheistic beliefs of the Hebrew faith. This synthesis allowed Moses to not only serve as a leader and prophet but also as a bridge between ancient Egyptian wisdom with the emerging spiritual framework of the Israelites.
Ultimately, esoteric lore casts Moses as a thaumaturge. It emphasises his role as a conduit of divine will. His life and actions, infused with the wisdom of the ancients, allowed him to harness spiritual knowledge to achieve divine purposes.
4. Divine Communication
The Magician acts as a conduit between the divine and the earthly realms. Moses frequently communicates with God, receiving the Ten Commandments and guidance for leading the Israelites. Consequently, his role as an intermediary who brings divine wisdom to people parallels the function of the Magician as a psychopomp.
5. Leadership and Liberation
The Magician represents new beginnings, leadership, and initiating change. In this light, Moses initiates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian bondage, leading them on a transformative journey to the Promised Land.
Ultimately, the true Magician archetype, the thaumaturge, always serves as a liberator of his people. He guides them from ignorance to enlightenment. IMHO, this is the deeper story for which the Moses story serves as an allegory.
The Magician card signifies inner potential and the power to make things happen. Moses the Magician, initially reluctant, discovers his potential. He uses his God-given power to perform miracles and lead his people. His journey from a pawn of the Pharaoh (ego-mind) to a prophet and leader of his people captures the essence of the Magician’s potential.
The Metaphysical Meaning of Moses The Magician
In the Biblical Tarot card above, we see Moses parting the Red Sea. Indeed, I believe we are not meant to understand this as a literal, historical event. I did some research over at the MBT to see if we can glean a deeper understanding of what this is all about.
According to the Filmore Fellowship, the ‘Moses Parting the Red Sea’ narrative represents profound spiritual concepts essential to transformation.
Pharaoh as the Ego
In metaphysical terms, Pharaoh symbolises the ego, the part of us that clings to old patterns, limiting beliefs, and materialistic desires. The ego is resistant to change and often keeps us in bondage to negative thoughts and habits. Moreover, Pharaoh’s stubbornness and refusal to let the Israelites go represents the ego’s resistance to spiritual growth and transformation.
Moses as Spiritual Wisdom
Moses represents the spiritual wisdom and higher consciousness that guides us towards liberation. He embodies the divine inspiration and inner guidance that lead us to seek freedom from the bondage of the ego. As Moses confronts Pharaoh and leads the Israelites out of Egypt, he symbolises our own journey of spiritual awakening and striving for a more enlightened state of being.
The Parting of the Red Sea
The parting of the Red Sea signifies the renunciation of bad habits and the courage to move through challenging and transformative experiences. The Red Sea represents the emotional and mental barriers that appear insurmountable. Accordingly, when Moses parts the sea, it symbolises the power of divine wisdom and inner strength to overcome these obstacles. This is how our Higher Mind can create safe passage for transformation to occur.
The waters of the sea, which return to their place after the Israelites pass through, represent the old habits and thoughts that we must permanently leave behind for true spiritual freedom. This narrative invites us to trust in our innate divine power to guide us through life’s tumultuous situations. It leads us towards a renewed consciousness and liberation of the soul.
