Nithaiah and the 5 of Wands
The 5 of Wands has a reputation for conflict, competition and disagreement. At first glance, it might seem like an odd correspondence for the Angel of Magic. Yet the more I have reflected on this pairing, the more sense it has begun to make.
When we care deeply about our beliefs, it is easy to become attached to being right. We see this everywhere. Different schools of thought compete for attention. Spiritual traditions argue over who holds the truth. Even sincere seekers can find themselves defending ideas instead of remaining open to new understanding.
Nithaiah reminds us that wisdom is something very different from certainty. He does not ask us to abandon our convictions. He asks us to examine them honestly. Sometimes the greatest act of courage is not winning an argument but allowing our understanding to deepen.
The 5 of Wands reminds us that friction is not always a bad thing. Just as iron sharpens iron, respectful disagreement can refine our thinking and reveal where there is still room to grow. Used well, conflict becomes part of the alchemy.
Nithaiah’s Tarot de Marseille Triad
One of my current areas of research explores the Hebrew letter correspondences of the Tarot de Marseille in relation to the Shem HaMephorash angels. Rather than assigning a single Major Arcana to each angel, I examine the Hebrew letters that make up the angel’s Divine Name. Together, these letters form a Tarot de Marseille triad that offers additional insight into the angel’s spiritual ministry.
Nithaiah’s meditation mantra, נתה (Noh-Tah-Heh), corresponds to Temperance, The Fool and The Pope in the Sephardic Kabbalah Tarot de Marseille system I learned from Michel Perez Rizzi in The 72 Names of God.
Nun — XIV Temperance
Temperance is the art of bringing opposites into harmony. Rather than rushing to conclusions or reacting impulsively, this card invites patience, balance and careful discernment. Before wisdom can be shared with others, it must first become part of who we are. Nithaiah reminds us that genuine spiritual understanding is never hurried. Like the alchemist tending the fire beneath the vessel, we are changed gradually from within.
Tav — The Fool
The Fool is often associated with new beginnings, but he also possesses the courage to walk his own path. He is willing to step beyond convention in search of truth, even when others fail to understand him. In Michel Perez Rizzi’s work, the key phrase for this card is “Say what you think.” Nithaiah encourages us to speak honestly, but only after our words have passed through the refining influence of Temperance.
Heh — V The Pope
The Pope represents wisdom that has been tested through experience and is now ready to be shared. He teaches rather than argues, guides rather than dominates. Having learned to balance discernment with authenticity, we become capable of offering insight in a way that serves others rather than our own ego.
The Message of Nithaiah’s Tarot de Marseille Triad
Nithaiah’s Tarot de Marseille triad describes a movement from inner refinement to authentic expression. Temperance transforms knowledge into wisdom. The Fool gives us the courage to speak with honesty, and The Pope reminds us that truth is most powerful when offered with humility and compassion.
Seen in this light, the connection with the 5 of Wands becomes even clearer. The card need not represent conflict for its own sake. Instead, it reflects the challenge of expressing our convictions in a world where differing opinions inevitably meet. Nithaiah teaches that the true work is not winning the argument but allowing wisdom to shape both what we say and how we say it.
How to Work With Nithaiah
Nithaiah is an excellent angel to call upon whenever you’re studying the Western Mystery Tradition or seeking a deeper understanding of the Divine. Before you begin reading or meditating, take a few quiet moments to set your intention. Ask not simply for knowledge, but for the wisdom to apply what you learn.
Reciting Psalm 9:1 makes a beautiful opening prayer:
“I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.”
Pray the verse slowly, allowing your attention to settle on gratitude rather than the answers you’re hoping to receive. Wisdom often emerges when we stop striving and begin listening.
Since Nithaiah belongs to Chesed under the rulership of Archangel Zadkiel, you may like to light a gold or violet candle before your study or meditation. Keep a piece of Citrine nearby as a reminder to approach every mystery with curiosity, humility and an open mind.
Nithaiah’s mantra, Noh-Tah-Heh, is particularly effective before reading sacred or esoteric texts. Repeat it gently until your mind becomes still, then begin your study without rushing. If a passage puzzles you, resist the temptation to force an interpretation. Sit with it. The deeper meaning often reveals itself in its own time.
