The Baphomet Threshold Tarot Spread
The famous image most people recognise today was popularised by the French occultist Éliphas Lévi in the nineteenth century. Lévi’s illustration shows a winged, goat-headed androgyne seated in a posture of balance. One hand points upward, the other downward, forming the esoteric maxim “as above, so below.” The figure is both masculine and feminine, earthly and divine, beastial and angelic.
Seen in this light, Baphomet is not an idol of darkness but an alchemical guardian of the threshold, guiding those who are ready to reconcile instinct and spirit.
Who Is Baphomet?
The name Baphomet first appears in historical records connected with the Knights Templar in the fourteenth century. During the trials against the order, accusations emerged that the Templars worshipped a mysterious figure called Baphomet. Historians generally agree that these claims were likely fabricated as part of the political campaign against the order.
Centuries later, Éliphas Lévi reimagined Baphomet not as a literal deity but as a symbol of occult philosophy. In Lévi’s vision, Baphomet embodies the fundamental esoteric principle that the universe is built from complementary forces that must be reconciled rather than denied.
Baphomet therefore represents:
- unity of opposites
- the marriage of spirit and matter
- conscious integration of shadow and light
- the sovereignty that emerges when inner contradictions are reconciled

The raised and lowered hands
One hand points upward while the other points downward, expressing the Hermetic principle “as above, so below.” The spiritual and material realms mirror each other.
The androgynous body
Baphomet’s blend of masculine and feminine characteristics represents the alchemical union of polarities.

The serpentine staff at the figure’s centre symbolises life force and spiritual awakening.

Baphomet stabilises that sovereignty.
