4 Weeks to Reading Intuitively Part 4

Welcome to the final part of the 4-week Intuitive Tarot reading course. Well done if you have stuck with it so far! Since this is a self-study course, you can begin at any time so it’s not too late to CLICK HERE for lesson 1! By the end of this week, you will have connected deeply with the cards and should be able to sense the energy of all four Elements in your body. You will also be able to sense the energy flowing between cards as well as how it rises to meet the question at hand. Are you ready for 4 Weeks to Reading Intuitively Part 4?

Today we begin our journey deep into the Element of Earth. As usual, there are 5 exercises which you can space out one a day, with the weekend off, or you can do a couple of them in one go. There is no homework to hand in and you are free to work at your own pace.

General instructions

A well-balanced Earth Element is what makes us feel safe, grounded, and capable in the world. The creativity of Fire, the inspiration of Air, and the lyrical quality of Water all get a practical expression here. Earth people (Capricorns, Taureans, and Virgoans) can be very creative but tend to look at what they create as being useful to a higher degree than more sanguine or fiery types.

Earth qualities that help us thrive are stability, dependability, pragmatism, physical strength, and abundance. On the other side of the spectrum, we have stubbornness, rigidity, dullness, laziness, and an inability to see possibilities beyond the immediate physical limitations imposed through time-space. Earth is a feminine element. (To recap: Fire and Air are masculine and Water and Earth are feminine)

Activities that increase Earth include working out in the gym, hiking, gardening, child-minding, and caring for pets. The corresponding chakra is the root chakra, located at the base of the spine. The root chakra energy center is red. Patchouli strengthens this chakra as does the crystal jasper. Earth colors are black, brown, burgundy, and dark green. Earth foods (no surprises here) are root vegetables.

Lack of Earth can easily be detected because it means you are not fully in the body. This makes us clumsy, so if you keep bumping into things, you probably need to take some time to just ground your energy again. There are many ways of doing this in addition to the activities suggested above. You can for instance walk barefoot on the grass, focusing on the sensation of the soles of your feet… or you can sit with your back against a tree trunk, breathing deeply while visualizing roots going from the base of the spine into the earth.

The corresponding Tarot Suit is Pentacles.

Keep a journal for each of the exercises below. In addition to taking notes about the exercises, make a note of your own Earth energy levels for that day. On days you are feeling sluggish and uninspired you could have an overabundance of Earth at the expense of Fire and Air, for example. Workaholics could be compensating for low Earth by trying to create stability in the Earth realm of work. Money matters can throw the Earth balance off. Stinginess is a sign of too much Earth and an inability to hold on to/invest money wisely shows low Earth. On days when you find it difficult to set yourself realistic goals, remember where you put your keys and/or you keep tripping on the cat’s toys, you are probably low on Earth.

Make sure that you can do the work for this week’s lessons undisturbed and let your family members or flat mates know that you will needs some time to yourself.

Day 1
– Locate the cardinal direction of North in relation to where you live. Place a rock, crystal or pentacle (disk with the pentagram) in the North and invoke the guidance and protection of Archangel Uriel. Place the deck you are working with by your chosen Earth symbol. Ask God to bless your cards and your mind with an understanding of the Element of Earth. Draw the alchemical symbol of Earth in the palm of your receptive hand with the index finger of your dominant hand. Visualize a smooth slate disk with a pentagram drawn on it in the palm of your hand. Place the palm over your root chakra (Earth center) and breathe in the Element of Earth. Every time you see/sense/become aware of Earth in the week ahead, draw the symbol in the palm of your hand to strengthen the connection. Complete the exercise by stretching out your arms before you, palms down, facing North. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and feel the connection to the earth through both your palms and the soles of your feet. Complete the exercise by giving thanks to Archangel Uriel and the guardians of this Element. There are many, both in the Angelic realm and in the realm of the Fae (gnomes).

Day 2 – Separate out the Suit of Pentacles. Create a clockwise circle with the Pentacles cards, big enough for you to sit comfortably inside it. Start with the Ace of Pentacles in the North. Sit down a visualize a grove of trees all around you. Relax and breathe normally, with your eyes closed, for a minimum of 10-15 minutes. Allow images to arise – do not force anything. You can go around the circle with your mind if you like, to see if any of the cards want to step forward. You may notice that the Court Cards can get quite chatty. Complete the exercise by picking up the Ace of Pentacles and say the following prayer/invocation out loud three times:

Guardians of the Element of Earth, guide me deep into your mysteries. Help me be a good steward while I remain in this body which is made of star dust and will return to dust after I draw my last breath.

Keep silent for a minute to see if they have a message for you.

Take notes of any visions or sensations that you experienced. Mindfully gather the cards back, moving anti-clockwise around the circle.

Day 3 – With the Suit of Pentacles spread out before you, turn on some music that you feel represents the Element of Earth. African drums are ideal but anything with a heavy beat will work. Your movements will be low, powerful, rhythmical and connect your energy into the earth. Grab one of the Pentacles cards and express its energy through movement (please make sure you are sufficiently warmed up).  Repeat this exercise with as many cards as you like (a minimum of three) and change the music if need be, to be more in harmony with the energy of the card you are working with. You will need to set aside an hour for this exercise.

Cool down and stretch your muscles.

Write down what you learned and make a note of which cards you struggled with. Repeat the exercise for those cards in a day or two.

Day 4 – Lay out the four Aces before you in the following order: Wands (Fire), Cups (Water), Swords (Air) and Pentacles (Earth).  Focus on the Ace of Pentacles. Meditate on how Earth interacts with the other Elements: Earth can shift tectonic plates with the power of Fire or there could be volcanic eruptions. Water turns Earth into mud. Air stirs up Earth into dust or is completely blocked out by Earth. Earth can form a container for Water and channel it in useful ways.

Shuffle the Aces back into a Minors only deck (simply take the Majors out). Without asking a question, lay out five to ten cards in a row before you (keep going until you have at least one Pentacles card on the table), paying attention to how the Pentacles card(s) interacts with the other cards. Is it happy? Is there balance? What temperature is the row of cards before you? How wet or dry does it feel? What is the volume and what kind of music would be playing? Is the energy flowing smoothly from left to right or are there major blocks/interruptions? Check if the flow is better or worse when reading from right to left. Change the order of the cards until it feels right.

Contemplate what you learned and make some notes, including what changes you made and why, in your journal.

Day 5 – From a full deck, fanned out face up, intuitively choose the card that represents how Earth is currently expressed in your being. Keep this card out.

Reshuffle, cut, and look through the deck face up until you come across the Earth Major, 21 The World. The card on the left is a clue about what you need to do less of to balance your Earth and the card on the right is a clue about what you need to do more of. Place these three cards below your chosen card and see/sense how the energy flows between them.

Write the reading down.

Please let me know how you’ve been getting on with this course in the comments below. Feel free to share your experiences or to ask any questions you may have! (Please note that comments close after two weeks)
