Laguz Rune Tarot Spread

Laguz is the water rune. It is symbolic not just of physical bodies of water such as lakes, rivers and oceans – It is THE symbol for the Element of Water. This makes the corresponding Tarot Major Arcana The Hanged Man, which is about altered states of consciousness, unconditional love, surrender and changed perspectives.

Water cleanses us on both a physical and an emotional level. This is why I chose to illustrate this rune with a frog in a pond. Frogs are associated with purification, as well as being water dwellers.

Spiritually, water is used in baptismal rites which symbolise a purging or death of the old self. It is also sprinkled as ‘holy water,’ used for many types of ritual cleansing and as a way of purifying both the mind and body during spiritual fasting.

Interestingly, there is great synchronicity for me with Laguz showing up the day after I decided to embark on another period of fasting. I’m grateful for the reminder about using the power of this rune to assist in the process.  My fast is going to be a holistic purge for mind-body-spirit. It’s been nearly three years since last time, so it’s long overdue!

The Anglo-Saxon rune poem for Laguz:

The ocean seems interminable to men,
if they venture on the rolling bark
and the waves of the sea terrify them
and the stallion of the deep heed not its bridle.
