Rehael, the 39th Shem HaMephorash angel, is known as the Angel of Submission. That title can make us pause, especially if obedience has ever been demanded at the expense of our wellbeing.

Here, submission means yielding to God with discernment. We bring what hurts into prayer, acknowledge what we cannot control and seek the next faithful action. Sometimes that action is reconciliation. Sometimes it is asking for help or setting a firm boundary.

Rehael’s associations with forgiveness, healing and regeneration offer a gentle place to begin when family difficulties or anguish leave us unsure how to move forward.

Who Is Rehael?

The Hebrew letters רהע form the 39th three-letter Divine Name: Resh–Hei–Ayin. Reh-Heh-Ah is the mantra.

Rehael is the angel’s name. Addressing the angel in prayer and meditating on the three-letter Divine Name are related practices, but they remain distinct.

His traditional Divine attribute is The Forgiving God, also expressed as God Who Receives Sinners. Rizzi gives God Quick in Forgiveness in his 72 Names of God. These formulations place mercy at the heart of the work.

Rehael belongs to the Choir of Powers, associated in this series with Samael and Geburah. His devotional qualities include forgiveness, family healing, regeneration and relief from anguish.

Submission, understood through these qualities, allows us to admit our need for grace. We can take responsibility for our actions without assuming responsibility for everything that happens to us.

In The 72 Names of God, Michel Perez Rizzi’s Sephardic Kabbalah Tarot de Marseille system associates Resh–Hei–Ayin with XX Judgement, V The Pope and XVI The Tower. His theme is Diamond in the Rough: the transformation of difficult situations into blessings.

Rizzi uses the image of carbon becoming a diamond under pressure to describe the spiritual potential concealed within difficulty. The invitation is to look beyond the immediate obstacle and recognise what may become possible through a change in consciousness.

Resh — XX Judgement

Rizzi begins with difficulties that seem to arrive from outside us: family trouble, relationship problems, illness or loss. Within this trio, Judgement marks their recognition as the starting point for a change in consciousness.

The first movement is honest attention. What is happening? How am I meeting it? What have I not yet understood?

Hei — V The Pope

The Pope provides a bridge through the impasse. Understanding and clarity help us discern a practical response.

This card is about finding a creative way forward where we previously saw only a dead end. The response may already be within our reach, but we need to pause long enough to recognise it.

Ayin — XVI The Tower / La Maison Dieu

Rizzi describes the falling fragments around the God House as heavenly manna or blessings. The sequence culminates in becoming receptive to possibilities that were previously hidden.

For me, this trio invites a change in how we meet difficulty:

Recognise the difficulty → discern a response → become receptive to what may emerge.

We need not call suffering a gift to receive help, clarity or grace within it. The diamond image leaves us with a question: what remains hidden here, and what might help us see it?

Working With Rehael

Bring one situation into prayer. Name it honestly, without trying to solve it immediately.

Read Psalm 30:10 slowly, allowing its request for mercy and help to become your own. Then gently repeat the angel’s name three times, or chant the Reh-Heh-Ah mantra.

You may use the 3 of Swords or the TdM trio as your visual focus. A piece of rose quartz can serve as a simple reminder of compassion.

Remain quiet for a few moments. Notice what needs attention, then choose one manageable action: ask for support, apologise, rest, seek advice or begin a necessary conversation.
