If you’re looking for a Tarot spread that cuts through noise and gets straight to the point, this is it.

Over decades of reading Tarot—both for myself and clients—I’ve tested more spreads than I can count. Most are useful in specific situations. A few are reliable.

But one consistently delivers.

This is the Clarity Tarot Spread—a layout I developed through years of reading when I noticed that most client questions require the same thing: clear insight, a real understanding of the challenge, and grounded action advice.

If you only keep one go-to spread in your practice, make it this one.

What Makes This the Best Tarot Spread for Clarity?

This spread works because it keeps everything centred and relevant.

It helps you:

  • isolate the core issue
  • identify the real challenge (not just the surface problem)
  • receive practical, grounded action advice

At the same time, it brings in two deeper layers:

  • The Quint — the underlying spiritual theme or pattern
  • The Shadow Card — what’s hidden, repressed, or influencing the situation from below the surface

The result is a reading that is both direct and layered, without becoming overwhelming.

This is not a predictive spread. It’s a perceptual tool designed for clarity, alignment, and conscious action.

Clarity Tarot Spread infographic in a calm, minimalist 4:5 layout with a soft parchment background in warm neutral tones. At the top, the title “The Clarity Tarot Spread” appears in an elegant serif font, with a subtle line reading “Focus • Insight • Direction.” A central oval labelled “Quint” sits near the top, surrounded by a gentle radiant glow, with the words “Core Theme & Spiritual Lesson” inside. Below it, three evenly spaced rounded shapes form a horizontal row: “1 Situation,” “2 Challenge,” and “3 Action Advice,” each in muted sage green with delicate line detailing. Beneath the centre card, a fourth oval labelled “Shadow” reads “Hidden Influence & Unconscious Patterns,” aligned vertically with the Quint above, creating a cross-shaped layout. Fine dotted lines subtly connect the cards, reinforcing the central axis. The colour palette blends soft sage green, warm cream, and light rose-gold accents. The overall aesthetic is clean, balanced, and contemplative, with a faint natural landscape texture along the bottom edge and the website “angelorum.co” centred at the base.

The Structure of the Clarity Tarot Spread

You’ll work with three cards, plus two additional elements drawn from the deck.

1. Pull Three Cards

Lay them out in a row:

  1. Situation / Issue
  2. Challenge
  3. Action Advice

This gives you a clear overview of what’s happening.

2. Calculate the Quint (Core Theme)

Each Tarot card carries a numerical value. To find the Quint, add the values of your three cards and reduce the total to a number between 1–22.

Use the following system:

  • Aces = 1
  • Number cards = their face value (2–10)
  • Court Cards:
    • Page = 11
    • Knight = 12
    • Queen = 13
    • King = 14
  • Major Arcana = their number (The Fool can be counted as 0 or 22, depending on your preference—just stay consistent)

Add the three card values together.

If the total is higher than 22, reduce it by adding the digits together until you reach a number between 1 and 22.

For example:

  • 14 (King) + 6 + 2 = 22 → The Fool
  • 12 + 9 + 8 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → Justice/Strength (depending on your system)

The resulting number corresponds to a Major Arcana card and reveals the underlying theme or spiritual lesson influencing the situation.

If you like, you can take that Major Arcana card from the deck and place it above the spread as a visual anchor.

3. Find the Shadow Card

Turn the deck over and look at the bottom card.

Place it below the row.

This card represents:

  • the unconscious influence
  • the part of self that has been set aside
  • the deeper pattern feeding the situation

Do not include this card in the Quint calculation.

How to Read the Spread

Start with the Quint.

This gives you the overarching pattern—the deeper context behind the situation.

Then move through the three cards:

  • What is actually happening?
  • What is the real obstacle?
  • What is the most aligned course of action?

Finally, bring in the Shadow Card.

This is often where the reading sharpens. The challenge frequently becomes clearer when viewed alongside what is unconscious.

Pay attention to repeating numbers, elemental balance, and visual flow—especially if you read with Tarot de Marseille.

Let the pattern speak before you interpret.

Question: What do I need to know about starting a 16:8 diet, especially regarding my health?

Quint — The Tower
There is urgency here. A need for decisive change. This is not about minor adjustments but course correction. The Tower carries Martian energy, pointing to action and movement.

Situation — Knight of Pentacles
A slow, steady pattern of overindulgence, particularly through the winter months. Comfort has taken priority over movement.

Challenge — 2 of Wands
The need to act. Awareness is present, but action has not yet matched it. The Martian theme repeats.

Action Advice — 2 of Pentacles
Balance and flexibility. Address the issue from more than one angle—diet and movement—without becoming rigid.

Shadow — 6 of Cups
Emotional patterning rooted in the past. Seasonal mood shifts are influencing behaviour. This is not purely physical.

Reading Summary
Change is needed, but not through extremes. A balanced, adaptable approach that also acknowledges emotional patterns will create a more stable outcome.

Final Thoughts

Clarity isn’t something you force.

It’s what remains when everything unnecessary falls away.

This spread strips a situation back to its essentials and shows you exactly where you stand—and what to do next.

Simple. Direct. Effective.

And in most cases, all you need.

Bonus Tip: Extending the Reading

If you want to take this a step further, you can pull an additional three cards to explore how things are likely to unfold if the guidance from the spread is followed.

Lay these out as a second row beneath the original spread and read them as a progression of near-future energy.

Keep the timeframe tight—no more than 6–8 weeks. This keeps the reading grounded and relevant, rather than drifting into abstract forecasting.

This isn’t about predicting a fixed outcome.

It’s about observing how the energy begins to shift when you act in alignment with what the cards have already revealed.

Used this way, the spread remains centred in clarity and conscious choice—while still giving you a sense of direction.

  1. much love! I appreciate U.
thanks for the much needed clarity with this spread.

  2. I’m sure you’ll manage to shed the weight, though I wonder if it’s not just SADS. There’s a saying, “Fat bears, cold winter”, and this winter has been (and still is) cold! So, that’s one natural reason to pile on a few extra pounds 🙂

As for the 16:8 diet, I’ve been doing time-restricted fasting for 7 weeks now, and am currently 1.5k UP on where I started. Admittedly, these have been very stressful times. I also worry that something about the fasting is pushing my buttons from when I had an eating disorder.

Still, have you seen this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qlrB84xp5g The woman is a researcher on time-restricted eating, and discusses the many health benefits. However, she also says that current research shows only a half pound weight loss through it. That’s not half a pound a week, that’s half a pound long term! And I can really see why – it’s quite easy to get used to, and it’s also easy to eat enough calories in your eating window to keep up your weight. Unless you’re seriously obese and used to eating literally 24/7 to maintain your overweight.

So, perhaps another reason for the Tower based on your question: you may be shocked by the ‘diet’ not being a weight loss method. On the other hand, if you use it as a way to change things up and be more mindful, then I’m sure you will see changes – that Two of Pents balance between the physical and the spiritual, perhaps…

    Best, Cx

Thanks for weighing in (haha!) on this, Chloe! No, I’m not shocked that fasting doesn’t work longer term… That’s not how I used it last year. I lost nearly two stone… it did the job! And I gained back less than 50% of the weight I lost so I’m still smaller than the same time last year. Yes, I can totally see how time-restricted diets can make you more obsessed with food. Really, common sense wins every time: portion control, ‘clean’ eating and plenty of movement… Either way, I don’t really stress about moderate weight gain any more. It’s not that much of an issue to me, thankfully. Life’s simply too short to stress about it. I love my body and I feel well… I’m just grateful to be alive!! Lots of Love, Lisa xx

      1. It’s funny, on the one hand I’m miffed as I started fasting to lose weight. On the other hand, it’s good to know that I’m doing something good for my body in other ways. And I saw myself on a video yesterday and thought, I still look fine. Plus, I’m really enjoying quite heavy weights workouts, and HIIT workouts, so I appreciate how strong and fit I am, even if I am a bit soft in places 😀 It will be interesting to read about your experiences with time-restricted eating… Love, Chloë x

Yes, muscle weighs more than flab! 🙂 I probably won’t be blogging about my wee weight loss project since it’s barely interesting even to me this time. x
