Many modern Tarot readers will tell you that you can’t ask ‘Yes-No’ type questions of the Tarot. The truth is, you can ask anything and any type of question of the Tarot… just be prepared for a ‘maybe’ when asking ‘Does he love me?’ or ‘Will he come back?’ In today’s post, we will look at some commonly used Yes-No Love Tarot Techniques.
Remember that most things aren’t set in stone and that a surprising amount of men (and women) aren’t sure how they feel themselves, in which case the cards are as stumped as they are.
There are many different ways of getting the Tarot cards to give you a ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ Here are a few of my personal favourites:
3-card answer with reversals
Mix the cards to include reversals. Make sure that there are roughly 50% reversed cards by cutting the deck in half and turning one of the halves upside down before shuffling until you’re satisfied. If all three cards are upright, it’s a definite ‘yes’ and if all three cards are reversed, it’s a resounding ‘no.’ 1+2 of the other means a probable yes or no… a maybe in other words.
3-card story spread
This requires intuitive reading skills but also makes an excellent way of practising reading the cards intuitively. Do not use reversals for this draw. Simply shuffle and randomly choose three cards and lay them out on the table before you. This is a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, and it will tell you the most likely outcome. The final card holds the key.
One of the advantages of this spread is that if the first two cards don’t resonate with the situation you asked about, then you know the cards are giving you the finger about doing a yes/no reading.
1-card quickie
You can use either of the techniques mentioned above for this. In other words, if you go with the first technique, an upright card would be a yes and a reversal would be a no. If you go with the second technique, you will need to tune in to the energy of the card and see how that energy meets the energy of the question. (Or you can use this quick-reference guide)
I prefer the latter method by far. And yes, it takes a while to master but is by far more reliable than simply going by reversals – especially for the 1 card draw.
Some cards, like the ones I chose to illustrate yes/no answers from the Tarot in the image above, are quite self-evident. Others take a bit more work and are more dependent on the context/energy of the question… Have fun experimenting!
Aces and 10’s
This method requires a well-shuffled deck. You simply pull cards off the top until you get either an Ace (yes) or a 10 (no). Only use the first 22 cards. If no answer has been given after you’ve drawn the first 22, the Tarot isn’t prepared to tell you.
Pay attention to where the yes or no lands. For example, if it’s in position no. 18, The Moon, then it’s likely that someone is trying to keep you in the dark, that you are deluding yourself or that this situation touches on very deep fears.
Yes/No Advice Oracle
This is a method I stumbled upon over at Mary K. Greer‘s excellent tarot blog. It’s quite a complicated method centred around where the Wheel of Fortune card lands. The main advantage is that it gives you one more option in addition to yes/no/maybe, i.e. ‘delayed/later.’ This spread also gives you quite a bit of information about the reasons for the yes, no, maybe or delayed. Hi there, I think your website is fab. I had been pulling yes/no cards in relation to twin flame questions. Every time I pulled a yes card it was the three of pentacles, even after shuffling. I thought WTF so I pulled another card asking what is the significance of the three of pents in relation to my questions? What card did I pull? Yep, three pents!! I have no idea what this means. Do you have any idea what this could mean? Thank you.
Hi Red, what was the original question and have you checked the card meanings section of the site?
Hey lisa π
I have a quick question, I pulled one card for a yes/no answer..I don’t use reversals…I asked if I should contact my love interest that I’ve recently had a disagreement with a couple weeks ago..We have had zero contact. I pulled the 6 of wands..Which I’ve read is a yes card, but the problem is..when I contacted him, he didn’t respond lol I’m feeling confused. How would u interpret this?…What are your feelings on the 6 of wands?..
You asked if you should contact your love interest – Not if he would reply. Now that there has been no reply, perhaps you can have clarity about the fact that it’s over. A full interpretation of the six of wands can be found in the card meanings section.
Yes, he didn’t reply yet but then again it’s only been a day. I will wait a little longer to see what happens. I will go check out your card meanings section, thank u. I absolutely love your blog.
Thanks for stopping by Arwen. π
I use STD’s method when I am doing a Yes/No, but I rarely do them. I prefer more. π Will be sharing as soon as I get to a computer that allows me to.
Thanks Lena! π I’m old enough to take a ‘maybe,’ ‘not now’ or even an ‘in your dreams’… π xxxx
Oh, yes! Wait… is it a “NO”?! Maybe?! Lol! Love your blog Lisa, you are the best! xxxx
Hey Anton, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I know you’re an intuitive reader so it would be cool if you blogged about how you reached the conclusion that a card was ‘yes’ or ‘no’… π I have every intention of giving my yes/no list for the cards on this blog but I’ll be careful to share the ‘Reading the Gap Technique’ link and point out that there is no absolute right or wrong answer with this method. However, when properly used, it becomes more reliable than a yes/no spread because there is a strong psychic link with the cards.
I was gonna suggest the method that Seeing through dark suggested :), it is really good. Also I usually use 1 card and depending on what the card is (all deck) I say yes/no. This is no method it’s just my way. For example: 9 of swords = no; 5 of Cups =no; 10 pents=yes; 6 wands=yes..no court cards by the way….may be I should blog about it but it would be long lol :).
Thanks for sharing this method, STD – not one I’ve seen before… will give it a whirl! Glad you enjoy the posts π
I have tried many yes/No spreads and the most reliable one I have ever found is the one using 13 cards and 3 piles. you keep turning them over till you reach an Ace or finish taking out 13 cards. then you move to next pile. You stop when you get an Ace and move to third pile.
3 Aces = YES
2 Aces = most likely yes
1 Ace = look to other two cards to find why not
this has proven like 60% of times accurate.
Of your given methods I liked the one which is having an Ace for Yes and a 10 for No. I asked a question about my love, and I got Ace of Cup in position 5, Emperor. The cards always pick up on our Fire/Aries energies π
Thank you so much for posting these spreads and layouts. I love your blog
I use practically the same method, with the difference that 1 Ace is most likely a No and no Aces are a total No (but I also see what type of cards are the three non-Aces the consultant draws, if they’re all positive it might be a “No but”).
