As the days grow shorter, the water in our pipes grows colder. This, in turn, means that I have to steel myself before I have my regular cold shower in the morning. But it also means that I get more bang for my buck in terms of a cold immersion effect. To me, this practice is not just about strengthening my immune system and living longer; it’s a spiritual practice that helps me fortify my aura and keep my channel clear.
Our ancestors didn’t need to carve out time or summon extra willpower to experience cold immersion. For them, icy water was a given during the winter half of the year. Drawing water from wells, washing clothes in rivers, or just regular bathing all brought them into direct contact with the elemental force of cold. Their resilience wasn’t built in gyms or through wellness routines; it was woven into the rhythm of life, guided by the changing seasons.
The Runes and the Wisdom of Cold
Cold immersion can be seen as a living rune practice. Each icy plunge embodies the energy of runes that were understood by our Nordic ancestors:
- Isa — the rune of stillness, concentration, and frozen clarity. In cold water, everything contracts into sharp focus.
- Hagalaz — rune of trial and disruption. Like hail, the cold can feel harsh, but it breaks old patterns and sparks transformation.
- Thurisaz — primal, bracing energy. The sharp sting of cold awakens hidden reserves of strength.
Working consciously with these runes before immersing yourself in cold water can help you build not only physical stamina but also clarity of mind and resilience of spirit. You can also experiment with chanting the rune name while taking your cold shower or plunging into your ice bath.
Deities and Spirits of the North
The cold has always been linked with powerful spiritual beings. Skadi, Norse goddess of winter and mountains, teaches us endurance, independence, and the ability to thrive in harsh conditions. Ull—winter god of oaths, archery, and glory in combat—invites us to treat the cold as both rite and training ground: a clear-minded initiation that sharpens focus, strengthens will, and forges resilience through disciplined practice
For those on a syncretic path, Archangel Uriel, guardian of the North and of winter’s light, supports wisdom-seekers. Uriel brings clarity in the darkest days of the year and helps kindle the inner fire when external warmth and light are scarce.
The Alchemy of Ice and Fire
On a physical level, cold immersion is praised for its ability to improve circulation, strengthen immunity, and lift our mood. Spiritually, the paradox is even more fascinating: by plunging into icy water, we awaken the fire within. The spirit rallies, the aura strengthens, and the mind clears. This is highly effective soul alchemy.
More Than a Wellness Hack
For me, a morning cold shower has become more than a wellness hack — it’s a daily ritual of renewal. It reminds me that I carry the strength of my ancestors within me and that discomfort can be a gateway to growth.
If you feel called to explore this further, try the Scandinavian cold plunge tradition as part of your spiritual practice. Go in with intention: chant a rune, galdr or dedicate your plunge to Skadi—or make a simple oath to Ull. This winter magic can strengthen your body, clear your mind, and fortify your spirit.
NB. If you have any health concerns, always check with your doctor before starting any new physically demanding practice.
