Overcoming Cynicism: How I Reconnected with My Spirit Guides

cynicism killed my connection with my spirit guides and angels

For years, I lived in a state of off-and-on spiritual disconnection. It wasn’t that I didn’t believe in the existence of spirit guides or angels. Deep down, I knew they were real and I’d had plenty of ‘evidence’ in the form of unexplainable events and experiences. But after a particularly traumatic experience in 2017, I started building walls around my heart, shutting myself off from their guidance. It was imperceptible at first, but religious trauma triggered regression, and in 2020, I regressed to the fundamentalist religion of my youth.

After that, dogma and fear-based teachings left me feeling unworthy, ashamed, and sceptical of anything that hinted at any of us being worthy of divine guidance outside canonised Scripture. I became cynical, dismissing signs and synchronicities as mere coincidences, and I convinced myself that I was better off relying solely on my logical mind and dogma.

This cynicism wasn’t just a defence mechanism; it was a survival tactic. I was afraid of being hurt again, of being told I wasn’t good enough, or of being led astray by false promises. But in shutting out the possibility of direct divine guidance, I also shut out a vital part of myself—the part that craved connection, healing, and purpose.

The Iron Armour of Cynicism

It wasn’t until I began healing from RTS and doing shadow work around toxic shame that I started to see how much of the armour of cynicism I still clung to. Through journaling, meditation, and art therapy, I confronted the deep-seated beliefs that had kept me from trusting myself and the spiritual realm. I realised that my cynicism was rooted in fear—fear of vulnerability, fear of judgment, and fear of failure. As I worked through these emotions, I began to soften. I allowed myself to be curious again, to open up to the possibility that there was more to life than what I could see and touch.

The Reconnection

Slowly but surely, I started to reconnect with my spirit guides and angels. It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but with each small step, I felt more aligned, more supported, and more at peace.

The lesson I learned through all this was to trust myself, to keep looking within for answers and to not need others to validate my experiences.

One who looks outside, dreams. One who looks inside, awakens.”
~C.G. Jung

If you’re reading this and feeling disconnected or cynical, know that you’re not alone. It’s possible to heal and rebuild that connection, no matter how long it’s been.

Overcoming Cynicism and Reconnecting with Your Guides

If you’ve been in a place of cynicism or spiritual disconnection, the journey back to your Spirit Team and your inner GPS can feel daunting. But it’s never too late to reopen those channels of communication. Remember that your angels and spirit guides know that life here on Earth is rough. They do not judge us and never stop loving us unconditionally.

Here are some essential tips to help you reconnect:

1. Acknowledge Your Cynicism Without Judgment

Cynicism often stems from past hurts or disappointments. Instead of judging yourself for feeling this way, acknowledge it with compassion. Recognise that it served a purpose at one time, but now you’re ready to move forward.

2. Start with Small Acts of Faith

You don’t have to dive headfirst into full-blown spiritual practices. Start small. Light a candle, say a prayer, or simply sit in silence for a few minutes each day. These small acts can help rebuild your trust in your angels and spirit guides.

3. Practice Gratitude for Signs and Synchronicities

Begin to notice and appreciate the signs around you—a feather on your path, a song that speaks to your heart, or a sudden feeling of peace. Keep a journal to document these moments and express gratitude for them.

4. Engage in Shadow Work

As I discovered, shadow work is a powerful tool for healing the wounds that keep us from connecting with our guides. Explore your fears, shame, and past traumas through journaling, therapy, or guided meditations. This inner work can clear the blocks that stand between you and your Spirit Team.

5. Use Tarot or Oracle Cards as a Bridge

Tarot and oracle cards can be a gentle way to reconnect with your guides. They provide tangible messages and insights, making it easier to trust the guidance you receive. Try pulling a daily card and reflecting on its meaning.

6. Meditate with the Intention of Connection

Set aside time each day to meditate with the specific intention of connecting with your spirit guides or angels. Visualise a golden light surrounding you, and invite them to communicate with you. Be patient—it may take time to feel their presence. Give thanks for the slightest energy shift you pick up on and acknowledge their presence. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t have visions or can’t hear clear guidance the first few times. Be patient with yourself. Working on strengthening your Third Eye is akin to rebuilding atrophied muscles.

7. Release the Need for Proof

One of the biggest obstacles to reconnecting is the need for tangible proof. Spirit guides and angels often communicate in subtle ways—through feelings, thoughts, or symbols. Trust that their guidance is there, even if it doesn’t come in the form you expect. When guidance comes, it is always simple. We are rarely given more than a simple message or one simple action to take.

The ego baulks at this because it thrives on complexity. Please understand that the ego is never satisfied with spiritual evidence. You can experience a massive miracle witnessed by others besides yourself, and the ego will still find a way for you to live in doubt rather than faith. Don’t negotiate with terrorists!

Guardian Angel Messages Tarot

1. Where Am I Blocked? – The Hermit

The Hermit is a card of introspection, solitude, and inner searching. It suggests that your blockage stems from a tendency to overthink or isolate yourself spiritually. You may be relying too heavily on your own intellect or logic, shutting out the intuitive and mystical aspects of guidance. The Hermit also indicates a fear of stepping into the unknown or trusting something beyond your immediate understanding.

Message: Your blockage isn’t a lack of connection but rather a hesitation to step out of your comfort zone. Your guides are waiting, but you need to be willing to explore the unseen and trust in their guidance even if it feels unsafe to show up more in the world.

2. What Do I Need to Release? – Ace of Cups

The Ace of Cups is a beautiful card of emotional renewal, love, and spiritual abundance. However, in the context of what you need to release, it points to holding onto past emotional wounds or unmet expectations around love and connection. You may be carrying residual pain from past disappointments, which is clouding your ability to fully open your heart to divine guidance.

Message: Release the fear of being hurt or let down again. The Ace of Cups invites you to let go of old emotional baggage and make space for new, healing energy to flow into your life. Your spirit guides want to fill your cup with love and support, but you must first release what no longer serves you.

3. How Can I Open Myself to Guidance? – The Sun

The Sun represents joy, clarity, and enlightenment. It suggests that the key to opening yourself to guidance lies in embracing a mindset of optimism and childlike wonder. The Sun encourages you to step into the light, release fear, and trust that the universe has your best interests at heart.

Message: Approach your spiritual journey with joy and curiosity. Let go of scepticism and allow yourself to bask in the warmth of divine love. The Sun reminds you that your guides are always shining their light on you—you just need to look up and receive it.

4. What Message Do My Guides Have for Me Right Now? – The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man is a card of surrender, perspective shifts, and patience. Your guides are encouraging you to pause and see things from a new angle. They want you to know that it’s okay to let go of control and trust in the divine timing of your journey. The Hanged Man also suggests that this period of stillness and reflection is essential for your spiritual growth.

Message: Your guides are asking you to surrender your need for immediate answers or proof. Trust that even in moments of uncertainty, you are exactly where you need to be. Sometimes, the greatest wisdom comes from simply being still and allowing what is to be.

5. What Will Help Me Trust Again? – Knight of Cups

The Knight of Cups is a messenger of love, intuition, and emotional healing. This card suggests that reconnecting with your heart and allowing yourself to feel deeply will help you rebuild trust. The Knight of Cups also encourages you to follow your intuition and take small, heartfelt steps toward rekindling your spiritual connection.

Message: Trust begins with listening to your heart. Allow yourself to be guided by your emotions and intuition, even if it feels vulnerable. The Knight of Cups reminds you that your spirit guides are gentle and loving—they will meet you where you are and guide you with compassion.

Action Steps:

  1. Spend time in quiet reflection (The Hermit) to explore your fears and hesitations.
