In today’s post, we are looking at a Dark Goddess calling, how we might experience it and how to respond. We use the Dark Goddess Calling Tarot spread to dive deeper. Yesterday, I learned that a lady in our village had passed away (may she rest in peace). We live in a small village in the North East of England and most of the villagers are older. I’m not sure exactly of what the average age is but I’m guessing about my age so mid 50s or higher. News of people passing is not rare.

Hearing of this lady’s passing made me revisit thoughts about death and dying. We are also approaching autumn and that tends to make me think more about death as well. While I don’t fear death, a dizzy spell the other week that made me lose control and fall over made me realise that I’m not ready to let go quite yet. It turned out I had a case of vertigo that cleared by itself after about five days. But while the dizziness was really bad, I felt as if the life force was slipping out of me. I thought I was dying and the thought that kept popping up was ‘…but I’m not done!’.
Death, a Constant Companion
It’s not the first time I’ve had a chance to contemplate these matters. In 2016, during a XIII Death-themed year at the UK Tarot Conference, I gave a talk about the regrets of the dying and how to use the Tarot to avoid them. Additionally, working with some of the Dark Goddesses, such as Hel, Santa Muerte, Nephthys and Hekate, made me confront my fears about death and dying. However, it can get really intense when you work with these Queens of the Underworld. Working with them is demanding and I willingly admit that I have not completed the full underworld journey yet. There is still more shadow work to do…
The Dark Goddess Calling
Receiving and perceiving a calling from a Dark Goddess is an intensely profound and transformative spiritual experience. This encounter often carries a deep sense of mystery and old fears rising to the surface. It also carries with it personal growth, involving several stages and manifestations.
Initial Signs and Awakening
Life events such as loss, illness, or emotional upheaval can act as catalysts, shaking our foundational beliefs and opening our mind to deeper spiritual experiences. This makes it possible to shift our gaze slightly to see her, She who quite literally is the ‘ground of our being’ and who tenderly holds the bones of our ancestors.
Vivid dreams or powerful visions involving Dark Goddess symbols (like ravens, serpents, or bones) may occur. When that happens, it is good to meditate on their meaning and make careful journal entries.
There may be a heightened awareness of recurring symbols traditionally associated with Dark Goddesses, such as crows, snakes, bones or any black animals in your daily life. Typically, when this occurs and you ask for a sign, a clear sign will, in my experience, be given within 24 hours.
Perception and Understanding
The magnetic pull from the Dark Mother is quite palpable. You may experience a strong intuitive sense or ‘inner knowing’ of being guided by a powerful goddess archetype. This requires trust in your inner voice.
Emotions ranging from awe and fear to a deep resonance with themes of death, sex and rebirth will surface, often reflecting the Dark Goddess’s connection with taboo or suppressed societal aspects.
Encounters with a Dark Goddess frequently prompt engagement in shadow work—delving into and integrating the unconscious parts of the psyche. This challenging process can ultimately be liberating and empowering.
Physical and Psychological Sensations
You may experience unexpected physical sensations like chills or tingling, or the sense of being watched, may accompany the experience. My crown chakra tends to go into overdrive and it feels a bit like someone is tickling it. For instance, dogs that are close to you may pick up on energies that are invisible to the human eye and start barking.
Feelings of fear, excitement, confusion, and being overwhelmed are common. You may feel torn between embracing and resisting the call.
Integration and Transformation
1. Ritual and Devotion:
Personal rituals, meditation, or creating altars dedicated to the dark goddess help solidify the connection and cultivate a reciprocal relationship.
2. Creative Expression:
Art, writing, or other creative outlets become essential tools for expressing the complex emotions and insights brought forth by the goddess.
3. Personal Empowerment:
By integrating lessons from shadow work and embracing the cycle of death and rebirth, you can achieve profound empowerment, resilience, and a deeper understanding of their life’s purpose.
Practical Steps to Embrace the Call
Learning about the mythology and symbolism of the Dark Goddess you feel drawn to work with. This can provide context and deeper understanding.
As always, the most important part of the journey is the one that takes you deeper within. Taking time for meditation and self-reflection helps clarify intentions and prepare for the journey ahead.
That said, advice from experienced practitioners, spiritual teachers, or mentors can offer invaluable support. There are also free resources available on YouTube and other platforms.
Above all, trusting your own inner wisdom and intuition is key, as the experience is deeply personal and subjective. What is true for someone else may or may not be true for you. Test the spirits!
Conclusion
The calling from a dark goddess is a demanding yet fulfilling spiritual journey that challenges conventional beliefs and encourages profound introspection and personal evolution. This path, although intimidating, offers the potential for significant spiritual growth and realisation of one’s true purpose.

This transformative journey likely began with an unexpected event or a swift change in your life, propelling you towards the Dark Goddess. It serves as a reminder to stay alert to the signs and opportunities that arise quickly, as they often signal the onset of significant spiritual journeys.
I feel this relates to the dizzy spells I had recently. It makes sense since this is a Mercury in Sagittarius energy card and the vertigo happened during Mercury Rx, giving me the necessary shake-up for pursuing a new spiritual direction.
2. The Awakening – 2 of Wands
The awakening phase is represented by the 2 of Wands. This card underscores the importance of initial contemplation and planning. As the call from the Dark Goddess emerges, you find yourself evaluating your path and the possibilities that lay ahead. It’s a moment of recognising your potential and making conscious decisions about how to proceed.
3. The Message – Strength
The core message from the Dark Goddess is embodied by Strength. This card represents inner fortitude, resilience, and compassion. The Goddess’s message is likely advising you to harness your inner power and courage. In the face of challenges, it’s crucial to approach situations with both gentleness and strength, staying true to your inner convictions.
4. The Challenge – Temperance
Temperance represents the challenges you’ll encounter on this journey. The key challenge here is finding balance and harmony in your life. The path of the Dark Goddess can be intense, requiring both emotional and spiritual equilibrium. This card advises you to practice patience and moderation, blending the dark and light aspects of your experiences thoughtfully.
Amazing! As I was shuffling, I was wondering if the Temperance card would come up. If you check my daily guidance post on Insta out, you’ll see why.
5. The Guidance – The Wheel of Fortune
The Wheel of Fortune as the guidance card indicates that the Dark Goddess is teaching you about the cyclical nature of life. Embrace the changes and understand that your journey will have ups and downs. This card is a reminder to go with the flow and trust the journey, knowing that every phase has its purpose and lessons.
This card corresponds to Jupiter and very much relates to the previous card Temperance. The astrological correspondence for Temperance is Sagittarius which is ruled by Jupiter. Interesting to note too that the first card to come out is a Saggie energy card. Sagittarius energy ties in with religious and philosophical explorations and is my Sidereal Sun Sign.
6. The Transformation – The Moon
Transformation comes through The Moon. This card signifies the profound changes that occur in the depths of your subconscious. It’s a call to explore your fears, illusions, and the hidden parts of yourself. The Dark Goddess leads you to uncover deeper truths and embrace the mystery and intuition that the Moon embodies.
7. The Integration – 4 of Pentacles
Finally, the 4 of Pentacles represents the integration of these lessons into your daily life. This card advises you to use what you’ve learned practically and securely.
