Myth, Lore, and Magic Connected with Crows and Ravens

Crows and ravens have long held a place of significance in myth, lore, and magic across various cultures throughout history. These intelligent birds are often associated with mystery, transformation, and prophecy. I’m currently listening to Crows and Ravens: Mystery, Myth, and Magic of Sacred Corvids on Audible (affiliate link) and absolutely loving it. It’s this audiobook that inspired me to dig out my Crow Tarot deck and also to share some facts about crows and ravens. Crow is definitely one of the best power animals to help you unlock your magick!

Norse Mythology

In Norse mythology, ravens are closely linked to the god Odin, the Allfather. Odin is often depicted with two ravens, Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory). These ravens fly across the world, gathering information and whispering their discoveries into Odin’s ears. This association with wisdom and knowledge underscores the deep connection between ravens and the divine.

Celtic Lore

In Celtic mythology, the Morrigan is a goddess associated with war, fate, and death. She is often depicted as a crow or raven or accompanied by these birds. The Morrigan’s shape-shifting abilities and her connection to the carrion-eating ravens symbolise the cycle of life and death, transformation and rebirth.

Native American Traditions

Many Native Americans revere the crow and the raven as powerful spirit animals. Some Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest see the raven as a creator and trickster figure. Raven stories often depict the bird as the one who brought light to the world, stole fire for humans, or created the first land. These tales highlight the raven’s dual nature as both a benefactor and a mischievous figure.

Greek and Roman Mythology

In Greek mythology, ravens are associated with Apollo, the god of prophecy and intellect. According to the legend, ravens were once white but were turned black by Apollo as punishment for delivering bad news. This connection links ravens to the themes of prophecy and omens.

Symbolism in Magic

In magical practices, crows and ravens are often seen as messengers between the worlds of the living and the dead. Their presence signifies an encounter with the supernatural or to offer insights into hidden truths. These birds are commonly associated with transformation, given their scavenging habits and their place in the natural cycle of life and death.

Ravens in Alchemy

In alchemical traditions, the raven symbolises the nigredo, or the blackening phase. This phase represents the initial stage of transformation where old forms die to make way for the new. This process is a necessary step towards achieving spiritual enlightenment and the creation of the philosopher’s stone.

Modern Interpretations

In contemporary times, crows and ravens continue to capture the imagination. They are often featured in literature, film, and art as symbols of mystery and intellect. Their association with omens and the unknown makes them frequent characters in gothic and supernatural genres.

In addition to crows and ravens, we also have hooded crows (aka grey crows), rooks and jackdaws belonging to the corvid group (Corvidae) of birds. The video below will teach you how to tell those five apart from each other.
