I made this spread to help you reveal and release the impact of both your past lives and the influence of your bloodline legacy you may still be carrying. Yes, it’s a big ask but if anybody is up to the task, it’s Huginn and Muninn!

Huginn (aka Hugin) means thought and Muninn (aka Munin) means mind or memory. We all agree on this but did you know that the first mention of the names of these ravens only appears in the 9th century CE? Rudolf Simek, author of the Dictionary of Northern Mythology, believes that some of the ideas we have now about Huginn and Muninn may be more recent inventions. Whether this is true or not, the fascination with Huginn and Muninn as powers of the mind is here to stay (for as long as we remember).

Huginn and Muninn as Representatives of the Allfather’s Mind

I believe the two ravens are central to the Allfather’s formidable intellectual and psychic powers. These birds are more than animals with the gift of speech. Each morning, they fly out across the world. Upon their return, they perch on the shoulders of Odin to whisper to him the events of the world. This grants Odin omniscience and knowledge about the happenings of humans and gods alike.

Central to this interpretation is the idea that the two ravens symbolise the dual aspects of the mind that are essential for wisdom and power—thought and memory. Without thought, there can be no plan or strategy, and without memory, we cannot learn from the past or maintain knowledge. Therefore, Huginn and Muninn are seen as extensions of Odin’s mind. They represent the Allfather’s need for a comprehensive understanding of the cosmos to maintain order and authority.

The association of the ravens with Odin, the Wanderer, also instils the idea of the wandering mind, seeking out knowledge and secrets. Odin was very much known for his quest for wisdom. This traditional view further emphasises the connection between the god and his ravens and the high value placed on wisdom and knowledge in Norse culture.

The Norse Concept of Ørlǫg and Karma

The Norse concept of ørlǫg and the Eastern notion of karma are both complex ideas dealing with destiny and causality within human existence. At their core, both concepts speak to the formative effects of one’s actions and circumstances on one’s life. Karma in Eastern philosophies is a law of moral causation, with each action influencing future outcomes according to its moral value. In the cycle of rebirth, the total of an individual’s actions in previous lives determines their current existence.

On the other hand, ørlǫg, a term from Old Norse culture, is more about the initial conditions and limitations set at birth by past family actions and the environment. We can view ørlǫg as the threads in the Web of Wyrd. Our ørlǫg can be affected by others and we, in turn, can impact the ørlǫg of those around us. One might argue that our karma is part of our ørlǫg.

Ørlǫg and the Hugr – The Norse Interpretation of Legacy

Ørlǫg is intricately connected to the hugr, which represents the mental disposition and latent desires of the individual. In Norse culture, the hugr is the total of an individual’s thoughts and feelings, shaping their personality and actions.

Within the hugr we carry the memories of our ancestors that subtly (genetically, one might argue) influence our behaviours and decision-making processes. This interplay between past influences and present actions reflects the dynamic and fluid nature of ørlǫg. We are born with a certain set of potentialities and limitations. However, our deeds weave additional threads into life’s tapestry, altering the pattern.

The Coalescence of Karma, Ørlǫg, and Hugr

In considering how karma is similar to ørlǫg, we see that both concepts regard the individual’s life as interconnected with a broader scope of time and existence. Karma infers that one’s current state is not random but affected by past actions. In parallel, ørlǫg suggests that one’s potential and limitations are not solely in their hands but are influenced by ancestral actions and societal structures.

Understanding these correlations can enrich our understanding of destiny.
