Who Is Menadel?

Menadel is the second of the two Shem angels governing the third decan of Virgo, ruling the five-degree portion from 25° to 30° Virgo.

Her name is commonly interpreted as The Honourable God. Rather than pointing towards ambition or success for its own sake, this title places integrity at the heart of Menadel’s work. What matters is not simply what we achieve, but whether our abilities are being used responsibly and in service of something worthwhile.

Traditional attributions extend Menadel’s assistance beyond employment itself. She may be called upon for freedom from harmful habits, greater willpower and discipline, protection from malicious gossip or obstruction, and support when changing residence. Older sources sometimes describe her as helping us overcome enemies. In practical angelic work, this is better understood as protection from malice and unjust interference rather than control over another person.

Menadel is especially useful when fear disguises itself as caution. Genuine caution helps us assess risk and respond wisely. Fear keeps us attached to situations we already know are no longer sustainable. She encourages us to make necessary changes with discernment.

Menadel and the RWS 10 of Pentacles

Menadel’s primary Tarot correspondence is the 10 of Pentacles, the Minor Arcana card associated with Mercury in Virgo. In the Golden Dawn tradition, it bears the title Lord of Wealth.

Wealth in this context is not limited to finances. The card represents everything accumulated through time, skill, knowledge, cooperation and sustained effort.

Work That Creates Something Lasting

The Rider-Waite-Smith 10 of Pentacles shows several generations gathered within a secure and established environment. Its older figure’s patterned robe suggests experience and accumulated wisdom. Meanwhile, family, animals, buildings and heraldic symbols combine to create a picture of continuity.

Nothing in this scene appeared overnight. The security of the 10 of Pentacles was built through work carried out over many years.

Menadel helps us understand that mastery develops through repetition, attention and the willingness to keep learning. A vocation becomes established because someone continues to practise their craft, solve practical problems and make their knowledge useful.

This is not the energy of chasing status for its own sake. Menadel asks what our work supports and what will remain because we did it well.

Mercury in Virgo: Useful Intelligence

Mercury rules thought, communication, learning and the exchange of information. In Virgo, this intelligence becomes analytical, precise and practical.

Here, Mercury wants to know how something works and how it could work better. It notices the missing detail, improves the method and turns knowledge into a usable system. We see this principle in the craftsperson, editor, healer, organiser, technician or teacher who understands that competence is a form of service.

Menadel can therefore help us identify abilities we have undervalued because they come naturally to us. A skill that feels ordinary in our own hands may be exactly what another person needs.

Yet Virgo can become paralysed by perfectionism. We may delay offering our work because it does not feel ready, or remain in an unsuitable role because we fear making the wrong move. Menadel’s gift is the courage to begin where we are and improve through practice.

Vocation, Service and Legacy

The 10 of Pentacles asks us to consider the wider consequences of our work. Does it create stability? Does it serve others? Could someone build upon what we leave behind?

Legacy does not have to mean fame or a family fortune. A well-run household creates one kind of legacy. So does a body of writing, a practical method, a business built with integrity or a skill passed from teacher to student.

Menadel shares the 10 of Pentacles with Chevakiah. However, the two angels express its energy differently. Chevakiah, the Angel of Reconciliation, focuses more strongly on family bonds, inheritance and right relationship. By comparison, Menadel directs the same Mercury-in-Virgo current towards vocation, useful activity and the structures that make a stable life possible.

Chevakiah helps heal relationships within the household. Menadel helps establish the work that sustains it.

Menadel’s Tarot de Marseille Triad

The additional Tarot method used here comes from the Tarot de Marseille system taught by Michel Perez Rizzi in The 72 Names of God. In this method, each Hebrew letter of the Divine Name is paired numerically with a Major Arcana card.

For Mem Nun Dalet, this gives the sequence:

These attributions belong to this particular Name-of-God method and differ from the better-known Golden Dawn correspondences between Hebrew letters and the Major Arcana.

Importantly, the triad does not replace Menadel’s established 10 of Pentacles correspondence. Instead, it describes the inner process through which we create the stable, productive and enduring life represented by that card.

Mem — XIII: Confronting Fear and Necessary Change

In the Tarot de Marseille, XIII is traditionally unnamed. A skeletal figure cuts through the ground, clearing away what has completed its purpose.

At this stage, we recognise that something can no longer continue as it is. A job may be draining our health. Perhaps a familiar identity has become too narrow. Alternatively, a habit that once helped us cope may now prevent us from moving forward.

Fear often intensifies when we know change is unavoidable but cannot yet see what will replace the old structure. Consequently, we may cling to an unsustainable situation because uncertainty feels more threatening than familiar unhappiness.

Menadel helps us distinguish what must end from what can still be saved. XIII does not destroy indiscriminately. Its work is necessary clearing.

This connects directly with Menadel’s role as an angel for overcoming fear and breaking harmful patterns. Courage does not require the absence of fear. Rather, it requires us to stop allowing fear to make every decision.

Nun — Temperance: Healing and Reintegration

After the clearing work of XIII, Temperance restores flow. The angel pours liquid between two vessels, bringing elements that have become separated back into a living relationship.

Major change can leave us feeling fragmented. Even a welcome departure from an unhealthy job, habit or environment creates a gap where the familiar used to be. Temperance therefore helps us remain in that transitional space without rushing to fill it with the first available substitute.

This stage is about healing, adjustment and discernment. What knowledge or experience from the past remains valuable? Which parts of ourselves were neglected while we struggled to maintain an unsuitable situation?

With Menadel’s help, we can gather these pieces and recognise how they might serve a better purpose. Skills developed in one career may transfer into another. Likewise, a difficult experience may reveal a need we are now equipped to meet.

Gradually, fear gives way to trust as we learn to respond thoughtfully rather than react from panic.

Dalet — The Emperor: Establishing Order

The Emperor turns insight into structure. He represents boundaries, discipline, authority, organisation and the ability to create stability in the material world.

Healing alone does not establish a new life. Once we know what must change and which abilities we want to carry forward, practical systems are needed to support our intentions.

Depending on the situation, this could involve applying for work, completing training, setting working hours, creating a budget or developing a reliable daily routine. We may also need to define the terms under which we are willing to work or establish boundaries around our time and energy.

Menadel’s connection with The Emperor reminds us that talent needs structure. Mercury in Virgo may possess knowledge, discernment and technical skill, but these gifts remain scattered unless they are organised and consistently applied.

Rather than representing rigidity for its own sake, The Emperor creates a dependable container in which useful work can continue.

Returning to the 10 of Pentacles

The Emperor is not the final destination. Instead, the order he creates provides the conditions in which the 10 of Pentacles can flourish.

First, XIII clears away what is no longer sustainable. Temperance then heals and reintegrates what remains valuable. Finally, The Emperor establishes the structures needed for stability. Through time and sustained effort, these foundations become the mastery, security, belonging and legacy of the 10 of Pentacles.

The King James Version of Psalm 26:8 reads:

“LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth.”

This verse connects beautifully with the Divine title The Honourable God. In particular, it turns our attention towards the place in which Divine honour dwells.

Symbolically, it represents the life we are building. When shaped by integrity and service, our work, habits and practical structures become a dwelling place for Divine honour.

Meditation with the Tarot Triad

Place XIII, Temperance and The Emperor in a row. Set the 10 of Pentacles beneath them as the result towards which the process is moving.

Next, write מנד in your journal or place the written Name above the cards. Take several slow breaths and ask that the working unfold according to Divine Will and for the highest good of everyone concerned.

Vocalise each syllable slowly:

Repeat the sequence three, nine or twenty-seven times. Then contemplate each card in turn.
